Getting rid of Bream!

Is there anything you can do to stop or reduce the amount of bream taking your bait when you are fishing for Carp.

 

I have tried increasing both Hook size and baitsize but the slimy buggers still snot all over my net. Shouldnt Complain really but it is so annoying when you lay down a bed of bait and all you are pulling in are Snottys!

I dont agree. Yes they are there rooting amoung your bait causing a commotion which will attract the carp, but if they are taking the bait everytime before the carp get a chance then I would prefer not to catch them if you get my meaning!

Perhaps fish way off bottom. this time of year floaters usually work and bream don't (usually) take baits off the surface. you could try a method float which is a big float with a cage feeder attached and you fish a bait a bit below it, again off bottom. othere wise fish a lake with carp but no bream (yes they do exist).

I have taken 6lb evidence to prove they do take baits from on or inches below the surface!

JBee, what kind of water are you fishing on? What species and what stock density?

 

Fishing off bottom does often work, as do very large baits. However, on one "hungry water" I all too often had bream off the top!

 

Bream aren't supposed to be too keen on hemp on many waters, at least that's so on a lot of lightly stocked venues. The lads such as Tony Miles fishing the hard pits such as TC and Queenford found that bream never coughed up hemp in the sacks, although they did do so with other items of feed.

 

Have you tried deadbaits? I find that, on hungry waters at least, carp get very quickly onto new baits whereas bream and tench are slower to respond.

 

Certainly deadbaits have caught me an awful lot of carp - and I'm trying to avoid them! Whitebait has been especially successful. Do a search to find some ideas on how I use whitebait. One tip I'll pass on though is that in winter I have to fish deadbaits on the bottom for perch as I find that fished up in the water I get even more carp!
