hooks straightening

Bought a packet of Kamasan b911 size 10 barbless. The fish are mainly carp up to 10lb and give a good account of themselves. 2nd fish the line went slack and came back with a partially straightened hook. Switched back to Drennan Specimen and the hook lasted all day with about half a dozen more big fish. Anyone else had problems with the Kamasan hooks

wotnob,

I believe Kamasan is a division of Gamakatsu (or not(?)). But I'm pretty sure my memory serves me correctly. Could very well have been a hook that was not annealed (sp) properly. Is this hook ferrous?

I use the same or similar hook but in so much larger size it is not worth any discussion.

Hi WNB

I have stopped using B911s because of just the problem you describe. I have also seen it discussed on other forums.

I now use maver or Guru hooks with no problem

I have used the Animal hooks with no problems. As it was a packet of 10 hooks I will ditch them as I have no confidence in them. I have foul hooked fish before on this water as it is quite shallow, but always managed to land them

Don't condemn a hook because it straightens out !

If roach fishing, a #14 that will hold a roach, but straighten out if a carp of (say) over 5lb takes your bait is very useful. (I would be using 3 lb mono - to give an idea of the pressure to straighten the hook) Once you are sure its a carp, give it plenty of stick. I am delighted if the hook straightens in such a scenario.

Consider the two alternatives - either a break off, or you are committed to a carp trundling round your swim for ten or fifteen minutes, then a commotion as its netted, thus ruining your chances of roach.

Replace the straightened hook, which takes but a minute or two, by which time you can usually get the roach feeding again.

That works if you are fishing for roach. Not so well if you are fishing for carp. Some people do.

I think Daves saying "it's horses for courses", you get a hook suitable for the target species, makes sense to me.

There's loads of hooks suitable for carp that would pull out of the fish before they'd bend out. As I said, even a lot of the finer hooks don't bend out so easily if the fish is lip hooked.

Right - I rarely fish for carp these days, when I do, its sight-fishing and stalking with floaters - have no patience with the "frighten the buggers to the other side of the lake and then chuck a bolt rig over to 'em" approach.

But that aside, five up to ten-pound-plus-a-little-bit carp are so easy to hook close to the dam wall on float-fished maggot (when using maggot loose-feed) at this particular venue I wonder why the carpers bother with all those rod-pods, baiting spods and distance fishing (don't tell me they are after REAL monsters - have never heard of nor seen any carp over about 12 lb at this lake). Did I say "distance fishing" ? - the lake is about 40 yards across and the overhanging beeches carry a garnish of the "distance casters'" bolt rigs and anti-tangle devices - if you think you need to put a bait under the beech trees, then all that's required is to walk quietly round to the other bank and fish under the rod tip !

I've learnt my lesson with small strong hooks - hook a carp and you have to play and land it. I have hopes of a decent (well, past the 1 lb mark) roach when I fish there so if I hook a gate-crashing carp I want rid of it ASAP.
