Fishing Patrols

Now there is a typical ENGLISH way with a problem:

We know it is going on, but make light of it by saying that they are not the only problem!

We want to put up signs in THEIR language (in ENGLAND???) saying that it is illegal (If they continue - what then?).

What this needs is action. IMHO it needs a Pole to be caught by the law (for a second time - so he cant plead ignorance!) and be HEAVILY fined (and possibly deported) in order to give the other Poles a clear message that when they are here they obey OUR laws!!!

Assuming they've broken a law.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Yes

That's a rather terse answer Ken, care to expand it a little?

Kleinboet, that's what's known as 'putting things in perspective'.

Think for a moment of all the other crimes the Eastern Europeans are alleged to be involved in, Human trafficing, drugs, murder, robbery, etc, etc. Then put the alleged taking of a few fish for the pot, in that list, in order of priority. Where does it come?

I have not seen anyone deny that fish are being taken, it's the scale of it that's in doubt, IMO.

Over my angling life time I have seen many people take fish, Poles, English, Scots, Welsh, Irish, West Indian, you name it, I've probably seen it.

Yet I still see fish in waters, still catch them. You don't seem to have a problem on your local water Kleinboet, with the number of 2lb roach and rudd, and 2lb-4lb perch you've caught recently.

It's always been the same in angling, (and more so with today's 'instant' fisheries). If the fishing gets tough, look for something to blame, "the place is crap", "it needs stocking", "it's too hot/cold", now of course, "someones taken all the fish", anything other than "I got it wrong, on the day".

I seem to be one of the few that believe something is basically wrong with the 'balance' of our fisheries. And that the mass introduction of fish of eastern origin(not people) is making the problem worse.

(Note to self, "don hard hat, sit back, and wait).

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Guest Brumagem Phil

I was reading the southern angler earlier and spotted an article which seemed to sum up the lack of evidence for anything regarding fish theft by eastern europeans.........

it was a survey of over 60 fisheries from fisheries.co.uk by professional coarse fisheries association.

More thanhalf said they were victims of fish theft with most blaming eastern europeans.......but only 3 of those 60 venues had signs in any language other than english saying you couldn't take fish and onlyhalf actually clearly stated in theri rules (in english) that it wasn't allowed.

Almost all the fishery owners said they would ban anyone caught taking fish (be interesting to know if those who coldnt be bothered to include it in their rules would also ban people) and half said they would inform the police also.

So there you have it......no signs, inept rules, and they wonder why they have a problem! Did you notice too how they said they WOULD ban anyone caught taking fish, and NOBODY actually mentioned that they HAD caught/banned anyone, and thats direct from fishery owners.

Gozzer, the water I fish (and have fished for nigh on 20 years!) does not advertise or permit matches on the site. As the owner said, it means that there are less people that know about it, but that it remains an unspoilt fishery!

Phil - I think you are very lucky! There are 5 commercial fisheries in my area, 2 have taken the syndicate route due to fish thefts from East Europeans (the one man approached a day ticket angler who was putting a Carp in a drum in the back of a trannie and was thrown in his lake for his troubles)

The others have banned night fishing, and the gates are locked overnight!

KB, you really do have a persecution complex! :D

Why am *I* lucky???

I quoted you an independent anglers association study thats been in a large fishing paper and from 60 fisheries NOBODY actually mentioned an actual incident. That tells me very clearly that whilst some poles will take fish (gypsies have been doing it for decades but nobody passes comment), that we don't have the great epidemic of eastern european fish stealers that some are suggesting.

OK Phil, Have it your way! Cormorants take more fish than the Poles! So therefore your posting intimates that we are all getting our knickers in a twist over a FEW fish.

I was invited to fish a water on an old Manor House property that had been taken over by a hotel group. I Blanked!! They netted the water and they blanked!!

Even though the water was full of fish when they bought it!

It turns out that the manor house was refurbished by a company who hired East Europeans to do it "and I suppose that they took a fish or two for food"!
