Just select as near to where you live and you can see the position of everything in the sky in real time. You can also make the earth invisible to see the whole sky and even remove the atmosphere too. It always stays in real time and shows the phases of the moon and all the other planets with their moons in exact position as they would be now. The graphics are excellent too!

Stellarium is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.

It is being used in planetarium projectors. Just set your coordinates and go.

Ajay, it's got nothing on Microsoft Worldwide Telescope, which is also free.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

For those of us with a sceptical bent, who like good science and good astronomy the blog of Phil Plait, AKA 'The Bad Astronomer' makes for an interesting read.

G'day all, up in the Darwin at the moment, visiting my son and new grandson...

Stellarium is brilliant, I have been using it for 8 months and it really is easy to navigate and to check up on 'that' star you wondered about.

The programme is a bit long, but well worth it if you want to know more about what's up above.

Another good one is this, also free:

Then, there is Virtual Moon Atlas, again, free.

For those in Southern England, the ISS will be shining really brightly:

The weather is too miserable to see anything at all tonight.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Guest Brumagem Phil

Was a great display earlier this evening in Brum.......super bright and tracked almost all the way across the sky right over head. Just seen it again but less bright and faded out half way across the sky.
