Hi i normally post on the coarse forum but a situation has arose. It seems i'm going beach fishing somewhere in Suffolk next wednesday (aparantly the tides are right ) What advice would you give someone like me?. I have 2 cheap beach casters and 2 fix spool reels and do know the basics ie knots etc. What i dont know much about is baits, rigs, and wether i can really bring myself to put that much strain on a rod during a cast (most of what i do is a gentle lob) Any advice for a sea fishing noddy is appreciated. BTW will be fishing into darkness dont know until what time.

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

just fish it the same way as you would ledgering ,the main difference is more hooks and a spikey weight ,some "modern" carp tactics are closer to sea fishing than coarse fishing .

as for casting with your side to the land chuck weight as far as you can into wet bumpy thing :D

rigs can be bought or made or buy one and copy it ,lean rod in rest wind until end of rod end gets a slight bend when it nods faster or differently than usual strike ,its all pretty crude.

for nightime a headtorch and spare torch (so you can see to put batteries in head torch if it goes flat) is all the light you need but tilly type lamps are still common if you wish.

a tiny chemical light sellotaped to your rod tip will show bites or slide on lights are cheap .

er, bu&&er looking for batteries and changing them. Get a second standby headlamp for £3.99 in Wilkos .

And forget expensive lights at the end of the rod (I dunno what's got into Chesters, he must have had a win on the lottery!) just wrap a small piece of reflective tape (proper reflective tape, not fluorescent tape) around the rod tip, and it will glow eerily in the reflected light from the headlamp whenever you look towards the rod.

And give yourself a stiff neck into the bargain as you'll have to spend the entire evening with your neck craned up at the sky! I'd much rather use Starlites (or the cheapest possible alternative) as at least then you can wander about a bit and still see bites out of the corner of your eye.

There are some excellent videos on baiting up at http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Videos/Fishing-...lication_Date|1

Among lots of other useful stuff, there are also several rig-making videos there too, but if this is a one-off you'll probably be best off buying some ready-made rigs.

I've been told were going to either Aldeburgh or possibly Felixstowe as second choice.

Does this help any?

As you're going soon, and the trip seems to be a bit of a one off, don't get concerned with casting styles, etc. There isn't time to do anything about that. So, you would be better off fishing somewhere with deep water close in. Aldeburgh is ideal, but be aware that there are restrictions in place at the moment, due to sea defence work, that may prevent you from walking to the deeper marks. If you fish Felixstowe, try to get down to Landguard point or the viewing area. There is deep water at both these places.

Faced with the same choices, I'd fish Aldeburgh.

As for light, you only need something to bait up by. When a decent cod takes your bait it'll pull the rod off the rest, so you don't have to be able to see your rod tip. :D

Guest Brumagem Phil

Did two evenings at Weybourne last week. Fished the high tide on the shingle bank there. Bought a 3 hook flapper from the bait shop and stuffed a lobby on each hook. Got a small codling on the first night and the second night got 4 small dab, 2 whiting and a small bass.

Only used my greys 7 foot stalker so only a gentle lob out with a 3oz lead to hold it.

Amazed at how many people were there on the friday night though!!

What species am i targetting at this time of year? Also what baits should i buy. As for casting i can hit about 100 Yds at the moment is this far enough
If I were going out with a newbie shore angler I'd take this approach.

What species? Anything that would take rag worm, squid and or mackerel strips.

Bait? I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago.

Is 100 yds enough, probably. Some of the marks I used to fish when I was younger it was possible to cast out too far.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
