Like you sayCory

We all got to be wise these days There might not be many Wayne Bakers in colchester, Theres probably more Andy Macfarlanes in Glasgow. But its still isnt enough for them to get your ID.

So enlighten me, tell me what it takes?

I don't suppose you saw the documentary on the TV a few moths ago where someone who had NO experiance of ID theft picked a name at random from the phone book and managed to open bank accounts and credit cards in the chaps name. ID theft is not about taking money out of your account, it's about using your details to get credit in your name.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Why make life complicated for others? just a simple County is enough, I have sometimes ignored posters who don't put any idea of where they are from.

As for opening a bank account, provided the bank takes the prescribed precautions then it is almost impossible. But then, if some are lax enough to give away thousands of pounds in mortgages simply on the word of the applicant, then none of us are safe.

That's what my signature is for. If someone takes something out in my name and I'm charged for it, I want to see a signature. If it's not mine, then who is at fault? Not me I'm afraid. A signed contract is a signed contract. If it isn't signed by me it's not worth the paper it's printed on.

They don't want your bank details chesters, they want enough info to get something like a drivers licence or to open another bank account in your name.

Andy, it's not that you'll be charged for it, that's unlikely to happen, but it can cause big problems with your credit record.

There have been cases (admittedly in the USA, not the UK) where the ID thief has even used a stolen ID when the laws caught up with them.

I'll not post any more on this topic, but be careful what personal details you reveal about yourself on line.

Some years back now someone pulled me for not using my "real" name and "hiding" behind a nickname.................

If I was to put up Stephen Burgess the only person who would recognise that would be my mother! Hmmm maybe I could "hide" behind my real name?!?

I mention that as I to prefer to know who Im talking to and where their from and if I hadnt explained the name thing to people who dont know me they might of thought I was being a bit hypocritical!

In fact people not knowing who you are can cause far more problems than if they do know!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

The reason I use 'gozzer' is that it's an old nickname, and has an obvious angling connection.

I sign my posts with my name, John because I feel it's more 'personal'.

There are several people on here who have my name, address, e mail addy, and my telephone number, and I have theirs. This has come about by 'talking' to them and making a judgement based on trust, (both ways I hope).

I remember the first PM I got on AN. It was someone threatening to "cut me up". He was quickly dealt with by the mods, I hasten to add.

Angling is a pastime that has many enemies. It's them that I don't want to have any more than the minimum info' on me, not the regular AN members. (though I am a bit wary of some of the regulars ;) )

As to location, a town is all that is needed to offer advise about fishing in the area, and I'm surprised when it's not included by new members.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

It never really occurred to me that people would prefer to know one's location, and as for the nicknames, when I first joined AN it seemed the thing to do so I just stuck with it.

I take Cory's point about security though, I am not comfortable with internet banking though I have bought loads of stuff online.

Alan :D

Our perception of time as an orderly sequence of regular ticks and tocks has no relevance here in the alternative dimension that is fishing....... C.Yates
