A member of the Agnatha superclass of jawless fish with bitey jaw...I don't think so.

Just goes to show that the artists employed by news outlets aren't to be trusted.

Love these grandiose statements its our fishes ancestor when it could just be the end of a short offshoot and its ancestor was the connection ,theres been millions of failed evolutionary off shoots in time

Lots of "could" "perhaps" "possibly" "may" "in my opinion" are abundant in "scientific" opinions alas ,strangely even the BBC version is completely different to cories unless they fixed its broken back?

Yes, seems to have some common features with lampreys/hagfishes. BTW I don't count agnathans as "fish" any more than I count fungi as "plants".

 

...and yes, neither the reporter's description nor the artist's impression tally with the palaeontologists' account.

In fairness, I did track down a much more detailed article complete with electron micrographs of the teeth and evidence for an articulated jaw but it was late at night and I couldn't be bothered with posting it here.

It remains to be seen whether the conclusions are torn apart on peer review but as a lay biologist, his reasoning appeared to be fairly sound.
