Opening Day Plans?

Recommended Posts

Just two and a bit weeks to go before proper fishing can start again, what will you be up to?

A change for me this year, usually I take the first week off work full of anticipation and enthusiasm only to find the fish are less enthusiastic and the glorious 16th turns out to be an anti-climax on flowing water. This year I only have the first two days off and will be at Marsh Farm tenching with bamboo rods on the first day. It’s an IAC event and the second in memory of Paul Goulbourn, really looking forward to a change and a new venue though my target species might not stand me in good stead for the largest crucian trophy.

I’ll then have a relaxed meander along the Kennet over the weekend with no expectations. It’s very full of water for this time of year and looks in perfect condition but I’ve fallen for that one before, whatever happens happens.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

My opening day came together quite nicely . . .

I also had a very enjoyable day at Marsh Farm with Mat and the IAC, a 2-08 PB crucian was enough for joint first place in the informal 'match', and thinking back it might well be my first of this spec

I'll be at Marsh Farm with you :) Although I will be trying mainly for a crucian in the traditional way I may well chuck a "sleeper" feeder rod out and see if I can pick up a tench or two as well.

I will stay on the trout sections of my streams, and wait a day or two before chub fishing,

Why ? River carp. Although there is a bivvy ban on the rivers, the intrepid specimen hunters camp on the best swims with umbrellas, hair rigs and bolt set-ups instead. It is usually impossible to get anywhere near the river until they tire of the silly game and go home - which typically takes about 48 hours.

I'm really excited about the river season this year, conditions are excellent and I can't wait to swap the fly gear for the trotting gear and get back out on running water. I have no grand plans for monsters but I can tell already it's going to be a lot of fun.

I've Decided this year i'm going to try and get back to my youth a bit more. No more trying to find big fish just going to catch fish of any size.

I remember i loved trotting maggots under a stick and catch 5lb of roach dace up to 3 oz . Or waggler fishing a small pond. I've become infatuated with trying to break my pb's that i sit for hours without a bite trying to tempt a specific species when there, are fish in front of me i could be catching. So june 16th will find me on the river just trying to catch whats in front of me.

Time of work for me is to precious as I use most for travel and I only dedicate around 5 to 6 days off a year to go fishing and that is usually rationed out in to half days on fridays to do some session fishing and so I never use a day up for the river opening season especially as it generally never seems to fish well for me. So my first chance will be the Saturday and as Euro 2016 will be on and I want to watch as many games as I can I am planning a bit of a nostalgia trip and do most of my June fishing close to home on the coppermill stream.

The big Roach of old are suppossed to have long gone but it must still have some nice Perch and Chub in it some where. It seems the perfect place for short trips that dovetail between games I want to watch and the ideal venue to try out some of the soft plastics that Kappa donated to the Wingham Fishin auction.

You should have a great day in Godalming Rusty. Not sure where I will end up on opening day - it won't be fishing thats for sure as I'll be in Italy on hols. Never found opening day to be anything other than dire so its not a huge loss! I will be putting the tench at Frensham Great Pond to the test some time soon after I get back, although watching Captain Pugwash noddying about in his yak on the Thames sounds like an appealing alternative to blanking!

I was planning to also be out on the kayak on the thames after scouting out a few areas with my shiny new reason for divorce (side scanning fish finder).

However after a few trips out trouting Im tempted to trot a float or stalk chub on a tiny stream.

I've taken a bit of a break from fishing over the last 2 years, only getting out a couple of times each season. This year I hope to be able to get down to the Trent for the opening day, on a rather nice trotting stretch near Trent Lock. The club used to have matches down there fairly frequently and the pegs were cut back a bit. Last year I had to do my own careful trimming, and I would imagine it'll be the same this year.

Looks like we've got some showers from now till the 16th with fairly steady daytime temperatures in the high teens and minimums around 11/12 degrees.

Could be great conditions for the opening day/weekend!
