All,

Nice post Ken.  May I  add a bit to your last sentence. I only hope we are talking about the same species.

2019 Striped Bass Fishing Season Closures

Stripers are anadromous fish, which means that they spend most of their lives in ocean waters, but return to their natal rivers to spawn. The threshold for a healthy population is essentially the minimal required amount of spawning female stripers need for the species to survive. Its current value is 202 million pounds.

On the East Coast, Stripers often go by the name of “ROCKFISH” A whopping 90% of the total catch goes to the recreational fishery. Recent studies have shown that as many as 9% of the fish released don’t survive the stress they endure.  Anglers kept 2.9 million fish for the pot. They released 3.4 million that ended up dying. (C&R in the US is another thread)

BIG DEAL??? recreational striper fishing supported 472,000 jobs, generated $68 billion in sales impacts across the economy.

Over here, we decided to prevent recreational anglers from taking a few bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) for the pot so that the French could hoover them up with pair trawlers just prior to spawning....

Makes sense to me....

Disgraceful -  they broadcast millions of eggs in a relatively short temperature range in the spring.  The fry will hatch in 60 - 65 hours
