Knife sharpening

Opinel Knives take some beating for work horse blades they sharpen on a house brick and keep a good edge. I have a Green river knife that I swear by my self, My filleting knife for the boat I made from a re ground Victorian carving Knife it is a buetiful piece of steel I have made a stacked ribbed leather Handle for it a bit like a Sykes Fairburn so no matter how gory the Hilt gets with Fish slime blood and guts it never slips in my hand,I keep this with a section of sharpening steel on a lanyard in a home made leather sheath,

Someone once said to me "Dont worry It could be worse." So I didn't, and It was!

I made a vow today, to never again argue with an Idiot they have more expieriance at it than I so I always seem to lose!

My Dad, a master plumber when it was all about hemp rope and molten lead, used to make knives using an old file for the blade, and leather tap washers of various sizes and colours to make the handles.

 

As a young kid, I learned to throw knives (something that H&S would be horrified to see nowdays).

And they are cheap. Just about every man woman and child in France has his or her own Opinel

the opinel knives are popular here as well. those traditional ones, in the tiny sizes are less than 3€.

Litriley Millions! My first set of stiches where curtisy of an Opinel :D I never engaged the blade lock fully :rolleyes:

 

My grandad used to do the same thing with old files, they where great but prone to be a bit brittle.

I taught my self to throw a knife after watching the Alamo and Old Jim Bowie making his last stand,

I still own a throwing Knife, I once put a kukrie through the side of a shed right past the fuller up to the narrow bit and they are supposed to be un thowerble it was a fluke though :D

 

By the way kids dont try any of this at home.

I have Gustav Emil Ern knifes for the kitchen, although the Kasumi 32 layer damascus steel knifes look good, if a bit pricey.

 

Cory, did you see the 32 layer damascus steel knives on sale in Aldi recently ?

The big one doesn't have great balance but the smaller knife is a sweatie.

No but funnily enough I am going to have a quick tour round Aldi tomorrow so I'll keep my eyes pelled. Thanks for the tip Ken.

I have a Kasumi damascus serrated knife which I use on bread, it's not that good to be honest, my good knives are Hattori, Shun and Wusthof, the first two sharpen like a dream, the wusthof takes some doing, but once it's sharp it'll stay sharp for a while.
