More than likely, On the other hand having the likes of Davy giving them a recognised commercial value can only help.

 

Would the C&W not only end up damaging Skate prospects? The commercial trawlers will carry on catching them since thats not an "intentional" catch, and would still be able to do that? But a recreational vessel targeting skate might be open to future sanction, regardless of wheather they catch and release or kill them?

 

I guess it would prevent the development of any targetted commercial fishery, but is that likely anyway? I know one boat almost got going on West Coast skate in the 80's but the monfilament netting ban, to protect salmon, stopped it from going ahead.

 

Perhaps large closed areas are the only real way skate will get real protection. Is it true that the adults don't range far? Could closed areas and a breeding program produce better results than legislation ?
