Advice on confrontations from FACT

 

1: BANKSIDE CONFRONTATIONS

The threat of bankside confrontations with anti-angling groups is more imagined than real, and very, very few such incidents have ever been recorded. Almost always, any ‘sabbing’ is carried out for the television or video cameras, and it will be designed to make you act unwisely.

 

· When planning an angling event, tell the police that it will be taking place and ask for a police presence if there are reasonable grounds for suspecting that disruption may occur.

 

· Do and say nothing unless you are threatened with physical harm or your property is (or is about to be) damaged. If you carry a mobile ‘phone, use it to contact the police. You are legally entitled to defend your person and property from attack, but never be goaded into confrontation with anti-anglers, either verbally or physically.

 

· Make a note of the number and description of the people involved, the vehicles in which they arrived and any other relevant information. Once it is safe to do so, report the incident to the police and, as soon as possible, write you own account of what happened. Send details of the incident to FACT and to the owner or controller of the fishing rights.

 

Remember – the law is on your side, but you must keep on the side of the law

Please be VERY careful who you approach at the side of a river, canal, stream etc and continue with the behaviour I have seen exhibited at other events.

If one was being mobbed and ones gear was being smashed then I believe that would constitute and attack and after asking them politely to stop at what point could one punch their lights out?

If you or your event is being or about to be sabbed...then its also a damn good idea to photograph it!

 

I've not seen any photographic evidence of sabbing though I've heard of many accounts of such behaviour. Instead of reaching for the sabber to throw him in, reach for your camera to photograph his/her antics.

 

We've all seen the pictures of birds caught up in discarded fishing line, its time we had some pictures of damage caused by the antis. I think we are going to need this in times to come...

I have said it before, we are our own worst enemies. On one of the Norfolk Broads boating sites there is a complaint about anglers who fish across a river with long poles. The anglers know full well that it is a navigable river, yet they swear at boats wishing to pass and causing the anglers to ship their poles in. Anglers set up in dedicated mooring areas, then swear when boats want to moor up. There are miles of river-bank that anglers can use. There are rather less miles of mooring areas.

 

I am the elected angling representative on the Broads Authority, I see the written complaints from boaters about anglers. It is very embarrasing when I can in no way justify the behaviour of the anglers involved.

If any 'anti' came near ne and gobbing off becuase i was fishing i would just say "Its good your sticking up for the fish, becuase you will be sleeping with them in a minute!" Then if it continued, things would possibly get messy, especially if they touch my Preston Innovations X3!! I wouldnt be happy Is there many reports of them trying to get you to fight them?

Ollie - things on the bank (and things on the forum here) seem to have cooled down a bit since this topic was started in 2005.

 

If you notice from the first post where PMs by a member who had never posted were being used to harass members you will see one reason we set the minimum of 15 posts before a new person could send or receive PMs.
