  1. if it doesnt boot from the floppy then it may need a delve into the bios to make it seek the floppy first although a strange lap top i had (a strange american armoured one as seen in the gulf war )needed the operator to hold down ctl,alt and F to make it boot from a floppy (the bios was un changeable for radiation reasons so much so it only could take a specific hard drive and no other)i sold it to the labs for a experiment it was the only machine the students couldnt screw up
  2. my old road was sheephatch lane ? obviasly not much sex education in the 10th or 11th century

  4. but it was cut off  there is no room to cut this one off when it on its hasp nor room for levers ,disc cutters or bolt croppers and its drill proof as well [ 10. August 2002, 10:56 PM: Message edited by: chesters1 ]
  5. towns  is that the place we go saturday shopping in ?.funny places ,the gardens dont seem to have fields attached to them or cows that eat your veggies
  6. havent you heard of precautions  its not the 1950`s anymore you cant go out and leave your front door open anymore  take it as a lesson make it very hard for people to take your stuff ,we shouldnt have to, but reinforce your sheds ,our old next door neighbour had his stuff nicked ,they took the roof off his shed. we all know how much it costs for decent locks and hasps (i mean decent ones that cant be cut),but dont forget the hinges use tamperproof screws (mine go through the existing frame into another made of 2"x2" wood )and make sure the pins cant be knocked out .the doors are double skinned .there are no nails holding my shed together all fixings are 4" screws including the fixing to the floor and roof .the windows are siliconed into the frame with 3 1" bars that run the length of the shed across the windows and wall.and lastly a very noisy alarm (2 for about £8 from argos) are mounted on the door + a very nasty surprise if they try to saw the bars (i was an electronics tech) we all know its bolting the door after the horse has bolted but this is a question of survival no one will help you so protect yourself . camera`s are very cheap some have intruder sensors that sound a buzzer in your house when activated and ofcourse floodlights . there is no real excuse nowadays if you put yourself in the situation that your only defence can be cut off probably a cheap chinese lock bought for a quid in a pound shop on a bent iron hasp. get the largest hasp you can afford then spend £50 on a real padlock .only a disc cutter will open these even the biggest bolt cutters will fail. learn from your loss, next time it wont happen. turn your house into fort knox as well, deadlocks, hinge pins and lock spreaders on the front and back doors ,bolts on the windows etc.it may seem over the top but think when was the last time a copper walked past YOUR door.
  7. maybe a suggestion that the particular lake ?maybe has blue green algae and they should rush the pooch to the vet a.s.a.p should work ,if they come back another day you will still have the thought that they paid for a vets attention next time say its veil`s disease ,after that denge fever ,swamp fever ,berri berri ,trench foot etc etc [ 10. 11. i am a little  about the muzzle velocity of uk air rifles ,didnt it change in the early 60`s to what it is today, i own a pre ww2 air rifle am i breaking the law in owning it? i also used to have a collection of gas guns (air rifles with a methonal?/ether injector) if i still had them would i now be in breach of the law . as for shooting deer with shotguns i used to hang about with a chap with a 12bore ,he used imported boar slugs ,he was a very good shot and dropped them all ,so is it illegal to shoot deer with a shotgun or is it illegal to use shot i also used to help the terrier man at the goshuns? hunt ,i cannot see them banning on the cruelty front as most times they may have chased a fox but rarely caught one ,i think its anti toffs forgetting that most of the people that attend the hunt are lookers on and indistinguisable from you and me [ 10. 12. i wouldnt use a car battery charger on a (if it is )a sealed gel battery it may distort the cells much better to trickle charge it (it should say the charge current on the battery and the time to charge it for)maybe a trip to the local model shop for a remote control car charger would be better remember that a fast charger may not suite the battery slow is good. if the pack is made up of nic cad cells even more care is needed ,it needs properly discharging before charging up again as they have a memory effect [ 09. 15. many many years ago i bought a revolutionary float that could travel upstream (yes honestly in the 60`s) it could also be "trimmed" to stay more or less stationary to the flow ,on unpacking with typical boyish zeal i discovered this monstrocity with several wings that stuck out below water ,i tried it out on the medway using most of my weights to get it to cock and yes it did go upstream (in a fashion) merrilly twisting the line into knots ,unfortunatly the moby dick that was supposed to pull this beast under was having the day off so i had great delight in losing it on overhanging undergrowth on the far bank that it decided to swim to the other and more carpy was a butt mounted swinging arm type bite indicator (it was silver paper or squeezy bottle tops then) the only thing was it had a solid end eye that you had to thread the line through everytime you casted it smashed against the rod and if you had any knots in your line (we were poor we tied line together) it caught them every time and very cleverly the ledger came back at eye level very fast [ 09. 16. i saw a program the otherday about the resurgence in butterflies , a chap was crowing that he had seeded his set aside land with native species of plants and was getting the benefit ,why seed ? seeds have a remarkable shelf life ,just remove the docks ,ragwort ,nettles and bracken and youl be surprised what DOES come up ,talking of ragwort i thought it was an offence to "harbour" it yet mile after mile of our council verges round here are covered but no procecutions  ,we went for a ramble the other day in the 6 odd mile circle we did at least 75% of the fields were overgrown and most of the rest had horses on ,agriculture what agriculture
  17. just walk about for an hour or so in it ,theyl come to you if there the medical ones there worth money, get rid of the fish [ 09. August 2002, 07:54 PM: Message edited by: chesters1 ]
  18. you should know phone (from earlier posts ) that we have NO rights in this country ,all land is owned (even council land is heavily restricted despite it supposingly being owned by the people)all rivers have riparian owners who say who can fish them ,if you think about it the government own everything ,if they want your house or land they will compulsory purchase it (you will get what the government thinks is the value of it) anything in the land (with a few restrictions )belongs to the government (should have a good parcell of old horse shoes ready soon )if you happen to find something historic whilst gardening. britain is turning into big brother soon our car journies may be logged from satellites if they get their way ,so you see they own whats under the ground ,the very ground itself if they want it and ofcourse any thing in the sky above the ground i suppose its a privilage to breath ,if they could tax it they would ,hey just a minute they do theres tax on "clean air" type stuff ,supposedly why we pay 60% tax a ltr for for it (or whatever it is) [ 09. 19. did he test the battery under drain ,you may have a duff cell ,it will read 12v but when the starter draws current it will drop very fast ,try borrowing another battery and see if the result is the same ,all the relay does is switch the voltage through its contacts ,they usually work or dont  check the pos conection to the starter for tightness ,if your technically minded you could bypass it with a VERY HEAVY bit of wire from the battery to the starter +pos terminal( not for the faint hearted i take no responsibility) without the rotor arm in place this will see if its the relay (do it while hot) or if the relay is cheap enough replace it ,this only leaves the starter it could be starting to sieze ,they can be stripped and spray grease CAREFULLY put on the bearings ,if its the old fashioned type that uses centrifugal force to engage the cog do not grease the spiral it attracts dirt and makes it worse
  20. the phonecall was a bit strange lyn was it from a farnham angling member or unsolicited if the latter how did they get your number ex directory for me maybe best to hide your e`mail address as well [ 09. August 2002, 12:06 AM: Message edited by: chesters1 ]
  21. i had a problem with my landrover ,it had intermittant ignition problems when hot ,one day it broke down on a single lane bridge just down the road ,a suzuki jeep towed me off it (ow the embarrasment) i found after 1/2 an hour it started ok ,at home i found that the low tension wire side of the ignition was faulty ,the wire had broken inside the rubber covering ,when it got hot the rubber stretched causing the wire to "break" ofcourse when it cooled it contracted and all was normal the vibration of the engine wiggled it enough to run,it took several hours of hard work with a meter to track the devil down
  22. does the engine turn  all the ignition switch does is trip the relay ,is the battery ok ,is the starter motor ok ,a sticky starter will need more amps to turn ,if the engine spins but doesnt catch its a fuel or spark trouble check the earth strap between the battery and body and to the engine [ 08. 23. vw campers (especially the old type) who ever invented this air cooled piece of junk needs stringing up ,underpowered ,underbraked and without removing the engine almost unworkable on .the heater is a joke .a bright designer would have made a removable bulkhead between the engine and the body so you could get to the important bits
  24. borrow a parrallel zip drive or connect the two together using the direct connection in windows or use lap link (the zip method is the easiest) [ 08. August 2002, 10:38 PM: Message edited by: chesters1 ]
