  1. Thanks Jeff, but it turned out that the ethernet cable was faulty, as I eventually managed to establish a wireless connection. A bit pointless really, as the router is right next to the PC. The main reason for wanting to use a router is that I thought it would give me better connection speeds, but it doesn't, especially as I found out that there is a software upgrade fpr the Speedtouch modem. It's very hard to draw conclusions though. I was getting download speeds of over 4Mb with the modem, but barely 1Mb with the router. Then I switched back to the router and found that it was now getting only 1.5Mb. It looks as if Tiscali can be very variable.
  2. You would have to be very careful of your phrasing if you were asking a woman if she was using one.
  3. I suppose it could be, but after doing a bit of research, it seems there are loads of people with exactly the same problem. The system info says there's nothing wrong with the ethernet card. Also, I recently upgraded from 2Mb to 8Mb Tiscali Max. According to one website, being as I live almost spitting distance from the exchange, I should expect speeds of around 6Mb. I am actually getting between 1.3Mb and 1.5Mb at the moment.
  4. I have one of these that I got free from Tiscali and have tried in vain for hours to set the damned thing up. I can't even get it to work via the ethernet cable and keep getting a message saying that the cable isn't connected, even when it is. There are some instructions for setting it up manually by typing http://192.168.1.1. into the browser, but unless I'm being exceptionally stupid, how the hell do you connect to that address BEFORE you have set the router up??? I have tried to get to that address via my old broadband modem, but it fails to recognise it. The Tiscali "Helpdesk" in India suggested that my computer was broken! Any sensible ideas please? I have tried running the installation CD with both AVG and Zone Alarm turned off.
  5. I also use OpenOffice. No way am I paying all that money for the Microsoft version.
  6. There's a bit of a difference: drive around the Huddersfield area and many of the attractive, grass covered hills were previously waste tips from collieries - walk on them if you like. The waste from nuclear power stations will remain lethal for hundreds of thousands of years.
  7. You can't blame the schools when a complete lack of discipline by the parents makes a teacher's job almost impossible. If a teacher reprimands a child these days, the most likely outcome is that the parent turns up at the school and threatens the teacher. Teaching must be one of the worst jobs you could possibly have these days.
  8. Look on the bright side - you'll get you £5 voucher much sooner if you buy your fuel at Morrisons.
  9. Just go carp fishing, then you can have two or even three sleeper rods out at the same time.
  10. Copy and paste this code into Notepad, then save it on your desktop as IErefresh.vbs It's handy if you are logged onto an active forum, if you are following a particularly lively topic. You could just keep pressing F5 all the time, but I'm sure it has its uses. 'IErefresh.vbs option explicit dim ie, url, refreshSeconds, i url = InputBox("Enter web site URL (http:// optional)") if url = "" then WScript.Quit refreshSeconds = InputBox("Enter refresh interval in seconds",,60) if IsEmpty(refreshSeconds) then WScript.Quit set ie = WScript.CreateObject("InternetExplorer.Application", "ie_") ie.Navigate url ie.Visible = true do until ie.ReadyState = 4 : WScript.Sleep 100 : loop while true i = 0 while i < CInt(refreshSeconds) WScript.Sleep 1000 i = i + 1 wend ie.refresh2 3 '3=REFRESH_COMPLETELY wend sub ie_onQuit WScript.Quit end sub
  11. Okay, disregard. I found the original post and the relies. I can't think how it happened though as I certainly didn't change it.
  12. I could have sworn I had already posted this, but I have even performed a search on all sections and can't find it. All of a sudden, I can only see the top post in each thread, even though I haven't changed anything. The replies are visible as headings, but life is far too short to bother with opening each one. I have looked at my control panel and can't find a way to alter the display. Does anybody know how to fix it?
  13. It's best not to really, as there is a big danger of using too much preservative. I always buy shelf life ones (Trigga) in preference to frozen ones, because I've had too many problems with commercially made frozen ones being far too soft or inconsistent. If I was making my own I would go for frozen every time, because I would know exactly how long I had boiled them for.
  14. The problem is that a canoe seems totally out of place on narrow, shallow stretches. It's like driving a 4x4 down a footpath. I remember being well hacked off when I had been sneaking up on a small group of chub under an overhanging bush, when two canoes came through and put an end to fishing for the day. Totally unacceptable in those circumstances.
  15. All of a sudden, I find that I can only see the first post on each topic. I haven't changed anything, so has something gone wrong with the forum software or is it just my computer?
  16. Just rub it down with fine glass paper and then re-varnish it. A mate of mine did that to the immaculate finish on his brand new Bruce & Walker Mark IVs many years ago and then painted them a matt sludge colour. It was the trendy thing to do at the time.
  17. People hate carp because they are known liars - and shifty with it.
  18. Hardly surprising - I was made redundant from Freemans about eight years ago. It was on my birthday and a day before I was due to receive my long service award. They only employ a fraction of the former numbers now.
  19. There has been a very lengthy and intensive study that has completely ruled out any connection between the MMR jab and autism. I don't understand what you mean about the other point.
  20. There is absolutely no link between the MMR jab and autism. The diseases that the children will be exposed to as a result are infinitely more dangerous and the irony of it is that the more parents who prevent their children from having it, the more vital it will be in the future.
  21. I wouldn't bother. I have never used any software supplied with a camera and usually bin it as soon as I open the box. Simply take the card out of your camera and plug it either directly into your computer or into a USB card reader. Then move the files via Windows Explorer. It couldn't be easier.
  22. Usually, in the fishing world, anything made and sold for anglers is something you can buy elsewhere much cheaper. This doesn't seem to be the case with bivvies though and most seem to be made of a better quality material than similar tents sold for for camping. There aren't many dome tents sold in camping outlets that have the same head height, enabling you to sit upright and look out at your rods. Sunncamp are one of the tent manufacturers who sell a bivvie as well as tents. Karsten are another, although their bivvies will cost you over £1,000.
  23. I gave up trying to tie rigs with rings and loops in them years ago, after coming to the conclusion that there was some kind of a copmpetition running amongst some of the top anglers at the time, to see who could get the silliest rig into print,
