  1. Newt, Yeah, I worried about the 50 lb of fish going in the trash. I think they (well, I don't really know what to think), I think they should have lost there rods and reels (poles of sort actually) and been able to keep the fish - if it was indeed sustance food. For sure the other guy thought they got off REAL easy! Phone (their car was about a '62 Plymouth)
  2. Tench, A random assemblage of fish merely using some localised resource such as food or nesting sites is known simply as an aggregation A shoal is a loosely organised group where each fish swims and forages independently but is attracted to other members of the group and adjusts its behavioUr, such as swimming speed, so that it remains close to the other members of the group. Schools of fish are much more tightly organized, synchronizing their swimming so that all fish move at the same speed and in the same direction. Carp and most minnows I think form shoals. (Hang together for a purpose, i.e. greedy) Silversides are classic schooling fish. (Hang together because they are hard wired to do so). Brits loosely use the word “shoal” to describe a grouping of fish in the same species while Americans use the term “school” just as loosely. Took me a long time to figure that one out. Ohh, while I’m at it 2 fish if the same species are fish. 2 fish of different species are fishes. Now to answer your question, I don't know. I have an idea but it is mine alone, not scientific. I think fish aggregration becomes more pronounced based almost entirely on conditions. Temp, food, etc (stress if you will). If all is well and bounty prevails the fish will be spread about a lot more loosely. As conditions "tighten up" (whatever?) the fish become more concentrated. That's the function of "loose feeding" - to make conditions "better" in one spot than anywhere else in the area. I'd say you are "schooling" the fish, you would say you are "shoaling" the fish. In fact we are both "aggregrating" the fish. Phone Sometimes when someone asks, "What time is it?" I find myself telling them how to make a watch. Hope I haven't "over the top'ed" your question.
  3. Frogger, Notice, Phone is across the pond. Our perch, quite different I'm told, fall to minnow parts almost equal to live minnows. Not so true of whole dead minows. Lip hooked heads with a much guts as will stay attached. Phone
  4. Vidar, I know there must be some subtle, or maybe even overt, differences between one rig for vertical jigging and one rigged for dropshotting. How would you describe those differences? Phone
  5. Went carp angling this morning. Tough call Two fellows ask if they could have my carp for the pot. Not an uncommon practice and I usually honor the request - all thinng being equal. It is a lincense requirement that you must stop fishing for 24 hrs if you give a fish away Today, I put one 12 - 15 lbr. in a bag (keepsack) with the intention of giving it to the two guys who ask when I quit. It wasn't long before a "fish and game" officer showed up. They have extreme police powers over here. Someone else had reported these guys for illegal fishing practices (the "illegals" were slightly around the corner and out of my site without me extending some effort). They had two 5 gallon buckets of very small - VERY SMALL fish (had to be a couple hundred or more) some of which were "game fish" with a kreel limit (both in number and size) for the number you can have in possession of a particular species. This was a "slot limit" lake. They said, the fish were intended to become "fishhead soup" The fish were all dead. Still, they were taken by the officer and the anglers were released with their fishing gear in their possession (I don't know if they received a citation). The guy who, I think, turned them in was "foaming, red faced mad" (for a number of reasons). We discussed what should have happened. He thought it was equal to bank robbery. I haven't made my mind up yet although I agreed "something" should happen. If the fish are already dead and they were intended for the pot I ask myself "why not"? - better eaten than dashed into the trash can. Not likely these guys are going to let their families starve, they'll be back fishing - somewhere. They used what I'd call "match fishing" style and were not stupid or unskilled. Why not some sort of school or introduction of the laws. The could have had the same number of "legal" fish called "rough fish" with just a tiny bit more effort. Maybe they were just "bad" like the other guy said. Part of his basis was simply profiling. I wonder? Phone (some of this is "fill-in as I was 30 - 40 yards away.)
  6. Denis, Nowdays, since catching isn't as important, I like a very slow rod and very very stretchy mono. I feel like it is the ultimate challange. It is by no means the most efficient. It matters, what the purpose of angling is. I no longer add "chum" either. Of course, I think it is important to "do as the Romans do" when fishing with a group. Phone (I doubt brand names would be of little use since we have only limited access to European/UK style gear.)
  7. All, Found this interesting. Lots of stuff out there on the subject. http://www.alternative-energy-news.info/te.../hydrogen-fuel/ Phone
  8. Severn, More likely the line don't you think? Only the line, mono, would be affected/effected by range. Can't recommend such a rod though. Phone
  9. Androo, Very good point. Drop shot angling is as every bit fiddly as any British carp rig. Teme Man, Actually I do understand scares me too. Phone
  10. Androo, Haver you ever used a glow paint excited with a lazer? The first time I saw it I was astounded. I don't do it, but I've seen it. Phone
  11. Rusty, Ha ha, Why you gotta bring me in this one? Teme man, you're preaching to the choir. Perhaps you've never coarse fished with a drop shot rig tied by me? Of course, coarse fishing can be done coarsely - that's the dictionary definition of the word - lacking in fineness or delicacy. Before I enter the argument would you define coarse (course is your spelling?) as being a "crude method". That would mean you're saying drop shotting is lacking in intellectual subtlety, perceptivity, or a particular skill set. Is that what you're saying? We "drop shotters" have no intellect, or skill? Heck, My hand thrown salmon spears, while crude require intellect and skill. First twenty time you throw one I bet you would only wound the fish. You have to visually learn to adjust for the water when you throw spears. And, some spears are better than others, few are available commercially. You have to be a pretty good craftsman as well. I love to insult in a intellectual way, can take a few shots as well. If your posts aren't insulting what are they? Intellectual? Phone
  12. Androo, If you are serious, and I assume you are, you don't want the weight of an add-on. See the attached. Carry a lazer pointer. It, the green, will be as bright as you could possibly want. Ohh, when not excited it is off white. http://glowinc.com/ Phone
  13. Vagabond, Take a look at that guys site. Other carriers have similar photo galleries. CN6002, according to the photo, is an early "Vista" car. Pretty cool they were. Logged many an hour in one. Then again, maybe this will help also. Here is a list of CN engine inventory. http://cnlines.ca/CNcyclopedia/loco/cnsteam.php Phone
  14. Vagabond, Well, I couldn't stand it. I searched around for a little as I knew all "reefers" were not refrigerated in the now traditional manner. I well remember the "ice houses". It is also where you went in town to buy ice in bulk. I cannot say how the word is/was added. http://www.whippanyrailwaymuseum.net/index...efrigerator-car Phone
  15. Vagabond, If one end or the other has a radiator its probably a "reefer". Here's the problem, I remember some cars being "iced". I don't know why that nags at me a bit when answering your question. I believe, but not positive, the "term" didn't become common until well after WWII and maybe late 50's. BTW CN 6002 was not a reefer. See this site. http://passcarphotos.info/Indices/RDC2.htm Phone
  16. Tigger, Then it's hard to tell if you are reporting an "environmental issue" or "sour grapes" toward EA in this thread. If you don't follow up (on both the EA and the pollution) who should? I can see why you say, "Phone, things don't work quite the same over here m8." If you care enough you have to follow up. Phone
  17. D, Here are the schematics pages. (so when you take it apart). http://www.abugarcia.com/support/reel-schematics I believe abu also has "owners manuals" or "how to" instructionals on the internet. Might look around. IMO you'll need some insturctional time with "someone" to shorten the learning curve. Without the levelwind your work is cut out for you as a first time user. (Looks new to me also). The looseness may be that the drag is completely loose (?). That's how they are shipped - no tension what so ever. Phone
  18. Androo, How did I know that? !! If you have a chance take a look at my second suggestion. Touch up quantities are perhaps half an oz. Maybe the same stuff is available in the hobby industry. Phone
  19. All, Odd this thread should still be alive. My 21 yr old grandson gave me the EXACT answer this morning about 2am. The question, I believe was: "how long before we run out of petrol?" The answer, "Grandpa, I'm about 5 miles from home and run out of gas. Can you bring me some? So, the answer, is 5 miles. Phone
  20. Newt, Damn! Alabama - that's what I meant. Cory, I suspect you are correct that we have them too. My only exposure to peanut farming is from GA all right. There is a river where they dump the ofal (sp?) from the combines. Carp gather in droves in this area. These peanuts are stored for a short time in a crib like afair. They are human grade and great care is taken to avoid aflatoxin. In truth, I don't know how peanuts get "out of the shell"? Only then, I suspect, could they be dried enough to be stored in huge silos. ALL SPECULATION on my part, I don't know peanuts very well. I do know carp don't like aflatoxin worth a dam. Phone
  21. Tigger, Didn't mean to imply we have a "perfect world" on this side of the pond either. Preface everything I said with - "on occasion". Phone
  22. barry, I suspect they (whomever) will try to "clean" the story up as much as possible for the world press. On Russian TV this AM it was reported Ghad did not "beg" but "commanded" the rebels not to shoot him. Just glad he's no longer a problem is life. Dead, is pretty much dead - maybe stories are already started "it wasn't him" aren't they? Phone
  23. Vagabond, Thanks for the translation. I thought my gord was leaking. 2 chub????? Phone
  24. Tigger, I guess I forgot to say, it is important to use a cell phone if possible. You need to make a call at the same time. It documents the "location" of the cell. Phone
