  1. Leon, Pike do push baits with their snouts. I have witnessed this several times when stalking pike in very clear shallow water. It gets frustrating working a deadbait in front of them only to see them give it a nudge turn then swim off.
  2. You ask about safe guards for hand guns. The law as it stood was adequate. That same law still stands good for rifles and shotguns. What exactly is the difference between a LEGALLY owned hand gun and shotguns and rifles??? The hand guns used for target shooting are nothing like the guns we see every day on tv or in films. They are single shot, have anatomical grips to fit the individual and are not exactly any use for mass killings that some seem scared of. If you do want safe guards. Then all hand guns MUST be stored under lock and key at a recognised and licensed shooting club. All ammunition MUST be purchased from said gun club. I have signed the petition. If were taking Olympics if hand guns are banned why not javelin, hammer and discus?
  3. Nearer six is my guess. I'm a Rudyard regular bank fishing tho. Rudyard isnt the best water for lure fishing. The fish are very how shall we say migratory in Rudyard. they move up and down depending on the time of year. Find the roach, bream shoals and the pike arent far away.
  4. I to have tried various types of hooks, but always came back to semi barbless trebles. What I do these days however is replace the top treble with a short shank, fine wire, barbed single hook. This is used solely in the tail root of the bait. This way reduced flying hooks catching in either the net mesh or outside a pikes mouth.
  5. If what my parents told me is true then yes its bad for them. I fed the pet goldfish bread when I was 3. The poor thing became bloated and went belly up.
  6. My hard drive recently died. As it was in its last throws on every start up, it went through a memory check on the opening page. Its still doing it even though a new hard drive is in place. I've looked in the bios and cant find any setting to stop it. Any suggestions please.
  7. Dick Walker used this method and created the best dace swim on the river for the next 12 months. I'm not 100% certain but theres some strange laws regarding badgers. Its illeagal to remove hair from a dead one, and I'm wondering if its legal to actually remove one from the roadside. Any chance some one could deny or confirm this please.
  8. A nice name. I liked it when i named my second springer. Yes we were mad enough to have another. A gorgeous black and white springer who lives up to the springer breed. She got nicknamed "ratbag" in her earlier year sand answers to that just as well as teal. One problem with Teal it rhymes with heel when training.
  9. I'm not sure if you can call it the old boy network. Its a uniformed service, with its traditions, drills, training etc based on navel methods. There is a very strict disicipline code enforced. In 28 years I have never known of a individual being punished for family indiscrestions. A firefighter has to enter all manner of property and to have the highest standard of honesty. I know from experience just how easy it would have been to pocket thousands in cash never mind jewlery etc. In effect the code covers matters that are found within industry. Rather than just issuing sackings etc its taken a step further and a hearing is held. This enables an individual to have either union backing or a solicitor present. The code is described very fully on basic training so every one is aware of it. I found by talking to friends in industry that they stood more chance of of being disciplined than I was.
  10. As an ex- firefighter I'll not comment on this prank, or many others I have seem over the years. Except to say this job seems to attract practical jokers.
  11. Steve, if you go to the information page and scroll down it states dry strength. I thought the line diameters were pretty accurate. Is this why its the modern trend in the comics is to state line diameter and not breaking strain? Giving just diameters means nothing to me I have always relied on breaking strain as a guide.
  12. Cant be shubunkins as there aint any in the pond.. There may be a good flow as theres a fountain one end and a spitter from a filter the other end. Plus more oxygenating plants than previous years. Looks like i'll have to wait till they have grown more and coloured up
  13. My pond is full of fry this year. Strangely there are 4 distinct sizes, in fact judging by the size of some seen this morning there only a day or two old. So my question is do these fish normally spawn more than once a year?
  14. What about those people who have medical conditions? Should they switch off there phones? My wife likes to ring me so she knows I'm ok and not having problems.

    Silt

I made a net up using galvanised fence wire for the frame. For the net enlist the help of a female, wife, girlfriend etc. eg borrow or steal a pair of tights. Cut off both legs and sew it up, then sew the knicker part to the frame. If the net is made rectangular it can be dragged across the bottom. It wont pick up all the silt but it will pick up the majority.
  16. I uesd to take this for angina its nick name was instant headache . It was a side effect of the drug. mmmmmmm i can just see the scene now, gel rubbed in a good response, then sorry my love but I have a headache
  17. There is one down side I can see to using flavours on lures. There would be any number of scent trails in the water. which could take pike/perch away from where the lure is working.
  18. Yes the shops are right. Fox do a single length of laccy, not quite long enough but will just about do.
  19. D I Y isnt so easy. The repair shoud be a circular patch. A split for instance could carry on splitting even after a repair unless its done properly. A repaired canoe will always fetch a lower second hand price. A bodged job would make it unsaleable.
  20. It needs to be welded. Its not a job to be done at home, contact a canoeing shop and they'll be able to tell you where to get it done. If its done properly the exact colour can be reproduced so very little can be seen of the repair.
  21. It can take up to 3 years for goldfish fry to change colour. I found 14 fry last year and transfered them to two tanks to over winter. 9 survived but only 6 have turned gold to date.
  22. Could the damage be caused by a rake? Is someone preparing a swim and using the damaged mussels as prebait? Havent mussels been put on the protected list? or is it just one type?
  23. Newt, the idea of the brass work on the rear of the reel was to prevent warping. They come in a vast array of sizes from very small to large, ( these were called "Scarbourgh reels") and used for sea fishing. The other sizes covered flyfishing and general coarse fishing. There were several different designs of brass work the commonest being the star back, this is the cross type brass work. These wooden reels were made by most if not all tackle manufactures and some shops had their names put on the reels to. I'm no expert so cant state whats valuble or common. Hope this helps.
  24. What is your definition of navigable? If its a canal then canoes have access provided a permit or membership of the BCU is purchased If your refering to a river then some have what is termed a navigation. Once again canoes have access provided theres a public access to the river. This amounts to far more than the 1% you quoted.
  25. Irrespective of the range at which they work, atmospheric conditions affect radio waves. Its not unknown for continental radio stations to be picked up by emergency sevices radios. This can happen to such an extent that the normal radio traffic is completly obscured.
