  1. Just upstream from Atcham the right hand bank looking upstream is day ticket. Above that its Emstrey Prince Albert have one bank and I think its L.M.S. The other. I havent heard of Preston boats so I suggest you ring Kingfisher Angling Centre 01743240602 for info.
  2. I belive that its already possible for an engine to run on water. Electrolosis of water that is an electrical current applied to water produces hydrogen and oxygen. The by product of burning hydrogen is guess what .......Water. Cant see it being mass produced though. Due to the big oil companies and goverments.
  3. quote: As far as dead coarse fish species are concerned, a dead fish can't spread any diseases, PROVEN Alan i have to contradict you on this statement. i was on a neeting party at a famous trout fishery the aim to remove some of the pike and transfer them to another water. The fish in this reservoir are known to carry the parasite argosillus (spelling?) The pike can be moved because the same parasite is present in the receiving water. Two NR bailiffs were present during the netting, they noticed one angler remove 2 pike and place them in his bag. These pike were about 5-6 inches long and were for use as deadbaits. He received a phone call fron the EA who had traced him through club officials. He was ordered to destroy these fish. The fishery scientists had doubts that the killing and freezing of the pike were safe to use.
  4. Up to a few years ago I was a canoeist so I 'm aware of the law goverening access. Apart from canals where a BW licence is needed and also for some rivers. A river can only be legally canoed where it is defined as being a 'Navigation'. Unless permission is sort and granted from the land owners. There also has to be public access at the put in and take out points. The majority of kayak users want 'white water' this normally means the upper reaches of a river and when its carrying extra water. The normal season for this being winter time. So the effects on anglers is at a minimum.
  5. when the lake district debate was going on. I emailed the EA about livebaits transfering disease. I later had a phone call from them. There has not been any proven case where bait caught from one water and transfered to another has spread disease. I do use live bait when and where its required but do not I repeat do not transfer them from another water. Again catching bait taking it home to use a few days later is fraught with danger for that angler. Any EA bailiff needs proof that the bait was caught during that session. If its not forthcoming he will assume the worst. I have discussed this with an EA bailiff and that was his reply.
  6. quote: Do you mean the 'Domhoff knot' I seem to remember this from some where but cant remember where or what. thanks for the pic DG, I feel a right wally now, I use that knot for spade ends.
  7. jaybee, have you tried the non- cellulose sprays available? I have used the black on a brown fibre glass blank to good effect. I apply as many light coats as it takes to cover the blank.
  8. Do you mean the 'Domhoff knot' I seem to remember this from some where but cant remember where or what.
  9. quote: but surely this phenomenum occurs on rivers where there are no camp-sites etc.? I have only seen it occur on one other river and that was just the once. This river flows alongside and under a motorway. As we fished the clear water went to be replaced by a brown suspension. The fish went off the feed to. Later the river started to clear and the fish resumed feeding. We put it down to the rubbish etc being washed into the river by rain.
  10. I asked about 18months-2 years ago. The EA denied releasing compensation water from the bottom of the dam. Its released from several levels and is mixed properly by the time it gets a few hundred yards down from the dam. They also denied using bore hole water from the Shrewsbury area. Strange though that a local informed me he can see this discharge from his bedroom window and it had been discharging frequently during that summer. This is the first I have heard re discharges from camp sites. I know of three on the Severn and know for a fact that two has an overflow problem from their tanks.
  11. As much as I like the palomar knot, I have had problems with this knot on several occassions. It beds down above the eye/swivel etc and wont pull tight with braid. I wonder if this is the problem in that it weakens the braid as its tightened up. I dont get this problem with a grinner knot.
  12. and even a full blown conspiracy about a link to the strange brown colour of the river at the start of several recent seasons. I assume by this you mean a brown suspension in the water. This was first noted back in the 60's and was a sign of a discharge from the clweddog reservoir.(spelling?) At the time all discharges were from the bottom of the dam and was cold de-oxygenated water. The EA now assure us that this doesnt happen as the water is mixed from varying levels. Associated with the recent colouration has been a noticable reduction in temperatue of the river. I also understand that the EA have a leagal responsability to maintain a minimum level at all times. Water for drinking is removed from the lower river. To help maintain the level bore holes around Shrewsbury are used. I am given to understand that this water is cold. I have experienced the brown colouration as far upstream as Welshpool, so this points to the reservoir. Its also strange that a slight rain fall can put inches on the upper river and which lasts for over a week. To my mind the only explanation is the reservoir is being used to avoid it flooding.
  13. I pinch a shot on either side of the float, as do thousands of anglers. Why complicate something thats so easy?
  14. Sorry, but I still think its a hellishly complicated rig for a river. What ever happened to "keep it simple"? It must be a difficult rig to cast having 2 differing weights on the line and how heavy must the coffin be to effectivly hold bottom?
  15. I tried this after I first bought some ( yes, a tight fisted git) using a fine sewing needle. Never had much luck then, with them holding position on the line. Gave it up as a bad job and buy new every time now.
  16. Wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to use for example a John Roberts legerboom and a piece of silicone tubing to get the same effect? Another point is as I never use a bolt rig on a river I dont have your problems. any breakage and the lead falls free.
  17. Have had similar problems on my local river. It was full of chub at the atart of the season but it seems as if they have gone. I dont for a minute belive this. What I think has happened is that they have taken cover under cut away banks and ovewrhanging foliage. In the close season 2 of us took a boat down the river collecting rubbish. This gave us the oppertunity to check depths etc., The number of undercut banks we found was unreal.
  18. Newt, rabbits and wood pigeons are classed as vermin here. Both make excellent eating. Braised breast of pigeon with No.7 shot stuffing magic.

    Pike shame.

They may have padded ends but they can still injure pike. Its the strength of the spring that forces the mouth open to far and may break or dislocate the jaw.
  20. My daughter has just started her 3rd year at college doing animal carer. The required exams were the general ones. Although she did specificly do science and IT. Apply for a prospectus from the agricultural colleges near you. Dont just go for the one in your home county. There are numerous courses and levels available.
  21. The test curve is the weight when applied to the rod that will bend it to a right angle. Knowing the test curve will give a guide as to what braking strain line can safely be used and also the weight of a lead or feeder. carbon fibre is a more versatile material and will safely handle lines and weights above and below. Richard Walker always said multiply the test curve by 3 for the minimum breaking strain and by 6 for the maximum. transpose the test curve in punds to ounces to find the optimum weight of legers etc.
  22. What is the definition of "expert"? Mine is..... Ex as in a has been, Spurt a drip under pressure. Any more?
  23. Newt. I hate to disagree with you regarding the size of shot you would use against a burglar. I read an american book years ago that recommended size 9. Just think what damage the lettered shot would cause to the internal walls. Size 9 shot would be far easier to repair.
  24. Herons are on the protected list.
