  1. Must admit to not caring very much on this one. My specimen/carp rods come with duplon and my fly rods come with cork. I thought they just came out of their mommys tummys that way. Never really sensed any plus or con with either material. All fashion really, why do carp rods really have abbreviated handles...read the theory of flex into butt etc....just don't buy it for normal angler, if it were true then double handed salmon fly rods would benefit from the same.
  2. Other wise lie face up on your bad chair arse exposed should be plenty bait, all fat and well fed, to be had in the morning. I would take the precaution of checking who is in the next swim or two before adopting this tactic. I would not grease the leader the disruption it makes in the surface tension either side of line is considerable like a huge slivery ribbon. The circumstances you describe for this fish behaviour usually coincide with that lull in the wind and that beautiful lake like a mirror period, which is even worse if you grease. The only time Admittedly coarse fish may not be educated in this regard, but..... I only grease the leader and use fly floatant on fast, tumbling rivers. When fishing dry fly, particularly on still days, it is usual to sink the tippet for this very reason. I would agree that using a fly rod would be easier and you can always hide it in the boot for those non fishing holidays !
  3. Also for the married or cohabiting members there is a ready supply of excellent material for hairwing salmon flys within your home
  4. Persil washing tab or bird table nut bags mesh bags. Baggage allowance prohibits leads in hold and security prevent pockets full of lead which was always my solution, so use mesh bags snaplink swivel and rocks.
  5. Glad find others think The thin blue line was utter dross....thought it was just me. Sorry with RC.......some one pass the bucket quick.
  6. Thanks that is excellent news. I had no idea about this for some reason.
  7. If I was targeting Bream I would use 2 14mm boilies on the hair with pellets in a PVA bag and cast it into the middle of a thick weed bed. Works everytime and filters the carp out.
  8. Hi all, I am going to show my complete ignorance As a holiday sea angler I am not up to speed really, although I catch a few fish. Are bass present in numbers as far North as Scotishhighlands, for some reason I thought they stopped in their range much further south, not sure where I got this from. If Bass are present in numbers that warrant angling for them then I will be after them when I am up their this year
  9. Fish, Fishing and the meaning of life (Paxman) Salar the Salmon (H Williamson) The House of Hardy Catalogue. But thats it: Would rather use the baggage allowance for a few travel rods and accessories
  10. Worming and prawning are accepted approaches to salmon fishing, don't do it my self, can't see the point. I would much rather catch a carp or tench if i am going to bait fish. When it comes to salmon: Lures would appear to prompt a strike for reasons of aggression. Why they take the smaller flies is less clear and many theories abound, which also seek to explain why as water temperature rises the size of fly that is successful reduces. Fishing in May/June in the Highlands I catch mine either on 28g tobies or size 12 doubles ! The salmon cannot feed in freshwater due to changes in its physiology but that does not eliminate the feeding response. The question is : what did the salmon think the bread flake was as is swayed and moved in the current, whatever it was it was enough to provoke a futile feeding response.

    caught much?

First trip for me is at Easter as usual. So nothing so far.
  12. Thanks. Might see that as my first stop is mexiana island, before I head off upstream.
  13. The river and the trout will be coping with these preditors long after we are all pushing up daiseys. If the population has been eradicated it is very likely chemical or similar. If the food becomes too scarce then the preditors move on. There is only one particular primate that is not influenced by the normal dynamics......
  14. Landing net first and last. Unhooking mat and scales out next, not to have camera and scales out means lack of confidence and a blank. (same with keepnet when I used to use one.) I never get a carp bite if i am thinking about fish or fishing, so I take books to read or whatch a DVD or go to sleep.
  15. Unity is a long way away. Just look at how quick the Death of a beautiful fish ended up game v coarse. 5 years on and just the same.
  16. I believe it to be the second largest tidal wave (not tsumani) in the world. I also saw the programme with the surfers. Has anyone noticed whether fishing in the wake is extra productive. Similar thing happens on (although it is not elevated but forms a line that makes a hissing noise) Lhinnie when I am sea fishing as the tide turns and just after it goes past the fish go bonkers.
  17. Where I fish in Scotland the owner of the rights on the river and loch is wise enough to state a policy of returning big pike to control the pike population. We are meant to kill single figure pike but I refuse to kill any pike deliberately due to some policy or rule and especially when I have been out on the loch actually targeting them. If as Peter says the fishery rules state culling upon capture then one is faced with the choice of leaving the fishery or rebelling....but why stalk a pike knowing you have to kill it unless you either are willing to kill it due to glory of capture given its size...or you support the policy. I have in ten years killed three between 4 and 5 lb......I smoked them and ate them bank side. The opening story can only be summed up as appauling.
  18. And everyone knows that one of the best ways to catch really big pike (especially those that are know to exist but are not caught) is to use a Jack. There is a view that really big pike on normal waters specialise in Jacks.
  19. I work with two people one 6ft 6 and the other 6ft 7 so I will ask. I am 5ft 6 and my inside leg is disproportionately short even for that height ! Similar with arms, but I have found someone who will make shirts to order in terms of sleeve length. Agree with chesters all my trousers (38 inch waist are not just altered for length they are hacked.
  20. Amazon for Pirarucu and cats for two weeks at the end of May. Good luck and massive bends in your rods to those travelling before me.
  21. I have the 2.5TC Hyperloop as well ver good value for money.
  22. Glad to hear that the wire does not hurt the perch, I had wondered. However I am as likely to use wire when fly fishing for game fish as I am to replace my Kryston merlin with wire. Wire no where near enough stealthy for game fish and thats what I am paying to catch. Will get some thin wire for when I case the chub and perch. The other good point is have you noticed how many commercial wire traces, especially those for pike fly and lure fishing are woe fully too short. I make my own.
  23. I may have been heard in the early 90s to say "I will never have an electronic alarm its not fishing". However once I fell asleep and woke in the morning to find my bait runner 2/3 empty. I subsequently purchased some alarms. It matter of fish care....just like using a trace when spinning for Perch in case a pike takes it. There is always a risk of dosing off.....and with todays noise polution the coin on tin is not certain enough to be justified.
  24. Does the wire damage the perches mouth ? Especially thin wire ? I must confess to getting into an almight row once because I always use wire when fishing and targeting for pike, whatever method, but I do not when fly fishing for salmon or lure fishing for them. Main issue being my claim that I had never been bitten off when accidently hooking pike whilst salmon fishing, 4 years and a few accidental pike on and this is still true. A few pike are caught each year on boilie on the carp lake i fish .....we have not swapped our braided hook lengths for wire yet ! I have been bitten of by pike(micro) when worming for Perch. I must admit to have discounted wire the odd times I pursue perch or chub with a fly, primarly as I considered it would be damaging to the target species, hence my initial question.
  25. My baitrunners and big pits are shimano. But I do use Okuma products. My two beach reels are both performing well for me as a holiday sea angler, cost 19.99 each. I also use an Okuma Integrity fly reel for pike and UK saltwater fly and that is extremely good value and very solid, and light for a wf10 reel. We also have two of their graphite fly reel wf8 size again superb for 20 quid each. Been completelt emersed in saltwater, with no issues or corrosion on the metalic components. Based upon my experience of the brand I do recommend their product to others.
