  1. That is superb passing it on Den
  2. I've been quite close a couple of times Steve. Once sheltered under a tree by the R Eden at Hever and the next tree along got split asunder by lightning, second time was about 5 years ago a flash struck the BT pole outside next doors house and the surge came in through the BT cable in to my PC and knocked it out. Quite a bang!!!!!! Must admit to "not going near" my rods during an electric storm at Larkfield................."don't care if I do get a run" Den
  3. Isn't most lightning a build up of static electricity caused by the friction of particles of moisture in the clouds? This static can do strange things...I was fly fishing out in a boat on Ardleigh res, and we had a terrific downpour. After it stopped, my mate said to look at his line..."where is it i asked"...it was pointing straight up 20 yds in to the air! the static discharge from the lake was lifting his quite heavy line, leader and flies straight up in the air. Took a couple of minutes for it to slowly come down. Maybe that's how people are supposed to levitate Den
  4. For one dreadful moment, so did I .................. Den
  5. Have a look at the Cree website, lots of stuff on there about LED lighting............loads of light..............much less energy needed................and no heat produced either. Way of the future. Den
  6. Having a poke about on Utube and found this.........still makes me tingle http://youtu.be/IgPRI6-8Efw Den
  7. Why not lie to the Travelodge? they don't care about their customers feelings. Just tell them you left the kids at home because you couldn't trust their booking system, but do that after you got your room Travelodge lied when they accepted the booking 7 months before. Den
  8. Some pretty crass answers to my question re the mother of three. She could be divorced, her husband could have died or left her, yes she MAY be a scrounger, but who looks after the YOUNG kids while she drives a bus? Whatever the reason, she quite obviously would need someone to look after kids (and pay them to do it) , child minder was suggested, ah yes, she could be one, and where would she "mind the kids" ? I don't like scroungers/benefit dodgers, seen a few on the bank, but she didn't come across as "One of them" Mind you, I did think the Essex joke was amusing Den
  9. You want to hear the rest Dave? he also pops open a beer now and then, almost always a can of red bull, and opens a burger box and eats that with a bag of chips resting on the dash. Oh yes, one other thing, he rarely uses his seat belt! As you say, the fag isn't that worrying.....................apart from the risk of cancer? Den
  10. Saw that John, but my reply was aimed at the others I almost didn't post, as you had already said everything needed, but it seemed to be being ignored. I get a bit uptight when people speculate about water temps, very rarely do they actually take any readings, let alone a couple over a period to compare. And your comments re the wind exactly fits what I have found (and been saying ) for about 30 years Den
  11. First off, I don't smoke, gave it up years ago. But I now fish with a guy who does, and we go in his truck. He lights up while driving. I open my side window, he opens his side window, and he tends to swerve a bit while lighting up. A bit disconcerting, but I have got used to it (almost) So, yes, it can be distracting. Den
  12. Phone, seems plain English from here mate. Others, any evidence of rising water temps? Did you measure it? I have no doubt that the temp probably did rise a bit, but some facts would help. Den
  13. You just have to use your eyes and look at the stuff as it rises. It is scum/detritus/dead weed and algae whtch has accumulated on the bottom over the winter. Gas builds up under it and as the water warms up the gas pressure rises and lifts the stuff off the bottom. Been happening on every still water (and a lot of rivers) all my life, and it sometimes forms great rafts and they drift into a bay.........carp will investigate it Trout will follow it up and grab mouthfulls of it to sift out any insects or whatever..pal of mine tied a fly he called "Green gilbert" and we fished it by allowing it to sink to the bottom and then a continuous lift up to the boat................deadly on Grafham Den
  14. What sort of job should an unmarried mother of three young kids get? Den
  15. I saw the topic heading and had a quick guess as to who started it..............and I was right Den
  16. Why is it that "we" have to understand that "their" culture is different? These people (whoever they are) are simple thieves, no more or less, and if they happen to come from Eastern europe then tough. I think his easiest answer is to do a bit of checking on people leaving, a few caught in the act and reported to the police might deter future thieves. Even a sign saying all anglers leaving will have their vehicles searched would help, and a few spot checks during the evening. But, maybe he has tried all that, maybe he doesn't live on site, maybe he doesn't want to risk any confrontations, after all, if they are of a different culture, then he may be at serious risk of injury. Simple answer is to put up a sign banning these type of people......................oh yes...............he has tried that every one is so concerned about some guy trying to protect his livelyhood, none of them seem to have similar problems, and yet he is branded racist. I also wonder what sort of response he would get if he did have reason to call the police for help? Den
  17. Pal of mine had several good tench Monday, day and night. Gravel pit SE Kent. Den
  18. And while we are on the subject of the Queen attending Maggies funeral, I think it is the final insult to all those people who suffered because of her policies. She might just as well stick two fingers up to them. Den
  19. Any one done any boat repairs there recently? Repaired any lock gates? Seems to have a def purpose, the 3 spouts being at different levels, and the welding looks good and the general design and the way it clips on to the fire bricks point to a proffesional job. Looking at the overall design I think that the different spout levels are deliberate. Doesn't look as though any pitch/tar or plastic was melted, more likely lead, would be difficult to melt aluminium out in the open. Got to say it looks a bit like a few of the "discards" in my workshop a "one off" job perhaps? Den
  20. I am not a catholic, and don't usually get involved wirh this sort of topic, but I did watch that little clip. I merely see a very sick child being offered up to the Pope for a blessing. The child is a bit heavy to hold easily and probably very awkward to hold as well. In my view, it was all a bit awkward and the Pope did his best, whilst leaning out of a vehicle and trying to "bless" the child. I would suggest that anyone who sees anything sexual in that really should examine their own thoughts, a dirty mind will probably see a dirty motive when I hug my grandkids. Den
  21. I've clicked the like button for you Dave, (thats Dave Chesters, not Dave H ) About the most sensible thing you have ever posted I was brought up in council houses, my parents having been rehoused after being left homeless due to being bombed out, and losing everything except the clothes we were all wearing. Den
  22. I like that link and the damned things also kill umpteen birds as well. Den
  23. Ohhhhhh yes nice one Den
  24. Yep, no licence needed yet.........and the scenery is a lot better Den
