  1. PVA is not as common in the US. I use grape sack. Phone
  2. May I suggest change takes time, money and perserverance. In the 1950's our Missouri River was in deplorable condition from human, animal and agricural waste. Now, in 2002 it is cleaner than many natural streams that feed it. Of course, many differences exist. For one this river serves far fewer people, and has a much larger flow than any in the UK. Still..... Phone [ 28. September 2002, 03:41 PM: Message edited by: phonebush ]
  3. Odd, this one. I'm old enough to remember when the women pierced their ears and men got tatoos. How did things get so turned around. Phone
  4. Newt, Kansas still has it's share of Jayhawks (Southern simpathisers) and cream of wheat ain't all bad. Phone
  5. Newt is close. South Africa not South America.
  6. To see a child smile, just add water. Phone
  7. Dave, In the US they are fished most often two ways using a slightly larger hook than normal. First threaded onto the hook; second goofy hooked so that they dangle half one side of the hook half from the other side of the hook. In both instances I prefer a little motion. Every five minutes or so bring them in a crank of your handle, maybe two if fishing at distance. Phone
  8. I am in the US. I am pro responsible angling/fishing the world around. In general, I am politically less government. You, in the UK seems to be antis among each other as anglers, at least on this this forum. I have tried to keep up with the politic of the day. It is impossible. Seems some anglers would cut off their nose to spite their face. What am I missing? Phone
  9. In the USA we don't fish long sessions. Probably 3 or 4 hours is the average. But that is not my subject. One afternoon I happened to see a snake taking a field mouse. I reached back toward my bait and another field mouse ran up my arm, across my chest and off into the field. Yep, I sure did but my pants were already wet from an unhooking episode. I'm not especially afraid of either mice or snakes but I'm sure my heart stopped for a moment Phone
  10. I still am in favor of releasing 80,000 - 90,000 pigs. It would give the "allies" a couple years to debate the pros and cons. Pigs are tantamount to a nuclear devistation in Iraq. Phone
  11. I no longer use springs because they are a nuisance rather than a convience. I agree with Chesters1 here. My goal is to make fish make very bad decisions. Phone To see a child smile, just add water.
  12. I ask once if anyone knew the history of the "bobber". As I remember Vagabond replied. On a fishing journey I purchased a glass "bobber" and learned the story of red and white bobbers. " ...in the late 1800's a yourn Norwegian immigrant boy, Rober Johnson was an apprentice glass blower at his uncle Louie's glass factory in Weston West Virginia. Robert used to practice his trade by creating copies of the colorful hand blown glass fishing floats that had beeen invented by glassworkers in his native Norway in 1840. Robert gave the fishing floats to the workers who were building the Western Virginia Lunatic Asylum in Weston. The workers used the floats on the lines of their fishing poles to hel them catch a new species of fish (carp) which the U.S. Government had recently introduced into the West Fork river. The workers began calling the floats Bobbers after the fellow who had created them. Robert was working on a white colored float, a gold filling from one of his teeth dislodged and flew throught the blowpipe, mixing with the molten glass. The chemical reaction of the gold and minerals in the glass caused White and Red streaks to appear inside the hollow sphere. This Red and White "bobber" became so popular the design was soon copied wourldwide as THE fishing bobber. Well there it is, the history of red and white bobbers. Phone
  13. Chris, Great post! Here in the US too few quasi learning books are available written for the 10 - 12 year old angler. I do recommend a great set of story books however. Huckelberry Fin and Tom Soyer by the famous Mark Twain. Phone Depending on his reading comprehension
  14. I too am not an expert on musky. I bet Newt can find a picture of the beast for you. It is a fish caught on lures. It's reputation is a fish of 10,000 casts. Muskellunge and Northern Pike are often mistaken for one another. The musky has a motled stripe up and down. The Pike has dots or stripes back and forth. Musky are long lived and gain very slowly by compairison to most other species. I believe they require a rather high density of prey fish. Phone
  15. Nathan, Are you talking a lake with weeds around the parimeter just out from the bank or all over the whole lake? Phone
  16. Jim Roper, Wonder if you might define "cruel" in the context you use it in this thread. Phone
  17. If wheat fills a fish quickly enough to be cautious why not bread? Not often we Yanks can offer a thought to anglers in the UK but - - - During the wheat harvest carp by the tons fight for position of hard winter wheat in the first couple rains after harvest. I must believe you because more than one has expressed the same opinion. Someone better tell the fish in Kansas. Phone
  18. Thought you Brits would enjoy this. Newt's Mama let me have it to post. Dear Mama, Am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Navy beats working for Old Man Minch a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things -- no hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. You got to shave, but it is not bad in warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, beef, ham steak, fried eggplant, pie and regular food. But tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit between two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches," which, the Sgt. says, are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys all get sore feet and we ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sgt. is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt. is like the school board. Cols. and Gens. just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bull's-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and don't move. And it ain't shooting at you, like the Higsett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it, you don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellows get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Your loving son, Newt P.S. Speaking of shooting, enclosed is $200 for barn roof and ma's teeth. The city boys shoot craps, but not very good.
  19. For me there is little difference in presentation between a pop-up of 3 feet and a float of 10 ft. Wondering what distance you are trying to reach with your cast, length and TC of rod and bait choice? These would be important considerations before selecting a rig for your purpose. Phone
  20. OK, You're right on. Each word, depending on how you pronounce it has a different meaning. Of course, I never know what we are talking about on the fishing forum when we use the word "lead". Phone
  21. Vanish is a flurocarbon line. If they only recommend one knot I suspect it would be the Trilene knot. The polamor knot will also work. I really really don't like flurocarbon line. Phone
  22. Spinning - lay on the floor with the spool label down. baitcast - have someone hold the spool of line on a pencil, line should come off the spool over the top. Spincast - same as spinning (usually if the reel picksup counter clockwise). Phone
  23. Unless of course the other team commits a foul, then we do in all over again assuming we haven't reached the line to gain which gives us four new tries. ad-infinitum Phone Did I mention he collects Intrepids? [ 18. August 2002, 05:05 PM: Message edited by: phonebush ]
  24. RogerB, I am not sure what Berkley Invisible is myself. In the US that is not a brand name of Berkley, Purefishing. If you mean there new mono it is Iron Silk and works well with knotless knot. If you mean one of the several flurocarbon lines I do not have personal experience and would listen to Newt. If you mean any of a number of Berkley braided lines again I would listen to others, I use only mono. Phone
  25. How about barter coins later called money. Without money no ladies of the night. No commerce No taxes - Well maybe not money. Phone
