  1. Ok, so what this got to do with course fishing???? Another senior moment???? Just kidding?
  2. As you said with the line coming off the inside, it pays to chop and change and a variation in presentation can result in a fish on a difficult day, or fool that shy Roach. I've lost count of the number I've retied due to a pigs tail. But that's my bad and no fault of the hook or lines. The one thing that puts me off ready rigs (pre tied) is I often tangle them taking out of the packet. I also sometimes need to cut down the overly long length or retie the loop. I also always pull on the hook to test the knot strength. Surprisingly how many fail a simple pull. Some brands worse than others.
  3. Its a nice looking gadget but I don't spool enough line often enough to justify it. I still dunk mine in a bowl of water then spool it on direct from that. If I don't like the way the line is curling I turn the spool over. Still simple after all these years?
  4. No ones mentioned it's still possible to use a spade end and a hair rig, I do. From about a 16 up. I also often tie an eyed hook with spade knot after passing the line through the eye. Depends what hooks are available and what I'm doing at the time. I also have way too many hooks. Put that in the other forum to add to the fun. (I don't use any other forum for my fishing but here) I use an old matchman hook tyer in plastic but have just ordered, well about two months ago, one made in gold coloured metal from wish. (Just in case I drop it and can't see it, i tell myself) I still use a 50 year centrepin for Carp fishing as well as trotting, but wouldn't even consider using a 50 year old cane rod. It's what works for you on the day.
  5. +1 for the above. You could depending on how fast the water running through, heavy feeder with maggots or chopped worm. Just enough weight to hold bottom, when (if) you get a bite the feeder is dislodged and the rod pulled over. Point your rod skyward to keep as much line as possible out of the water. Used to be a very popular method on the Trent in the 70s & 80s. Just keep an eye on the water levels and safety first.
  6. Don't forget a wire trace if you're going for pike.?
  7. No worries, offers always open. It's around 5 - 10 mins from my home and as I'm retired now it's no inconvenience. It can be a daunting place, but get it right and its rewarding. Tight lines Andy
  8. Gozzer, Have you considered a longer trip out. NW Sheffield, Dam Flask. Massive. It has huge shoals of bream, roach, perch, many pike, some chub a few other species including the odd huge trout. Absolutely no carp whatsoever and the fish in there don't even know what F1 means. Less than a fiver a day, £3.40 I think if you're retired. Tackle shop about 2 miles away that organises the Pennine reservoir championship or something, I don't match fish but the owner talks to me about it as I know it well. I've fished it on and off except when I was in the Army for over 50 years and have had some spectacular days, some blanks too. Nice little cafe/post office in the village of Bradfield if you fancy a walk with the Mrs. If you decide to try it, I'd be more than happy to show you which I consider the best swims. It's rarely fished now, 1, cos it's got no carp, and 2, cos people like nice flat swims with fish bubbling under their feet.
  9. Big fella always wore braces, didn't he visit once to try fishing here?
  10. I had a little look round a local pond the other day, 1 chap fishing, he was cold wet and miserable. Glad to talk to me to break up his day. Going on for 4pm at the time and he'd been there from early and catching intermittently. Didn't want to pack up as it was his one day off that week. Sort of made my mind up then it was time to call it quits for the year. Its flooding very bad here today, rivers bursting banks, houses flooding, most of the city is gridlocked and many roads closed. No buses, no trams. Been on TV that Police have told staff at Meadowhall shopping centre (I call it meadowhell) to prevent customers leaving as all roads in the area are impassable. TV showed rivers damaging property. So glad all my family are home, just hope those at Meadowhell get out. Definitely not fishing weather. Roll on spring.
  11. Methinks that's it for this year. Cleaned sorted and put the tackle away in the dry. I normally have a week away in November then the odd day Piking through to February time. This year I'm feeling the cold too much and the rain is getting me down. Apart from the odd day shooting I'm hibernating till spring.
  12. Isn't that a spelling error? There should read out?
  13. Well done Mr Elton Sir, Nice to have it back. Hope it works out?
  14. It's November now, didn't we leave in October? ??? ?
  15. But the rod rings and legs are already in place and paid for. So is the bail arm on your reel. Once unhooked there's nothing to catch the line in a wind/on the cast. It just seems you're complicating the already simple. Overthinking.
  16. Camo is for those who have: 1. No military service experiance 2. To follow the crowd 3. No idea of why they wear it. 4. Wannabe bees.
  17. What's wrong with using a rod ring, or ring leg. KISS
  18. Last time I had my licence checked, probably sometime in the 80s. I get a monthly or quarterly news letter from the EA, cant remember which but it always reminds me to buy a licence despite having always held one fron the 70s onwards. Maybe it's just a random email?
  19. Don't think my 6 & 8 year old grandkids would like it to be honest, there's nothing to sing along to....
  20. I live close to Ladybower and can honestly say I've never seen inflatables used there before. Maybe it's a new thing. I've also never seen anyone fishing in that area either. Occasionally see bank fisherman but rare. Its normally wooden boats from further up on the same bank. Also "normally" prohibitively expensive. I'm booked for my first fly fishing lessons by boat in April 2020 along with my son.
  21. The Sheffield star is rubbish, people in that area are normal working class and voted for OUT. Out means out, regardless of anything else. We should be out and long gone by now. Everyone I know in Sheffield still wants out and just wants the bloodly government to get on with it and do what the should have done 3 years ago. LEAVE.
  22. Try the Drennan red range feeder rod, affordable, available and covers 100 per cent of my feeder work from fish of under an ounce to carp over 12lbs. Must be rich if he can stock up on Browning shotguns, they ain't cheap. I can't even afford one. Mine are Spanish.
