White rag

I havent heard of anyone, and certainly struggle to buy them over here- digging your own is the only option.

There was a thread a few weeks back banning them from competition due to their rarity.

Would have thought they would be too fragile to post and keep alive.

Slightly off topic - when digging for white rag, where do people look? I have found them in the end depressions left by black lug at the low tide mark on a few beaches recently but damned if I can find any in the standard shingle / shale or mussel beds that you normally dig looking for ragworm?

Any pointers lads?

Have never found anywhere where it was worth digging for white rag as the primary target.

Usually it comes as a bonus when digging for blower lug, or the big black yellowtails.

My impression is that the cleaner the sand the more often you find good-sized whites. Areas with darker and finer material in the sand seems to yield much smaller whites.

Has anyone else perceived any sort of pattern ?

Its worth keeping - even if you only get one or two (and keep it seperate from lug) 'cos its a darn good bait.

From my experience, I have noted the following:

- clean sand

- Not too muddy or coarse in texture

- Near a feature such as a stream, rocks, or sandbanks (the best)- not open sand

- somewhere with some decent tidal movement.

Not too sure that is useful having read it! I would say that my favourite spots are not right at the low tide mark, but closer to the top of the beach, and they work well.

Would like to get other people's views.

Hiya, The white rag that we dig in Buckhaven, are all found in /under the mussel beds in black smelly mud/sand. I think its black cause of the coal which can be found fairly readily all along ther shoreline. They are mainly found a few inches under the surface. Which is far easier for me to dig, rather than digging for King Rag that is generally about a fork legth or more down.

Digging king size white rag is is no problem, the tides are. You need the big ebbs which don't come that often to get the best digs where you can gather 50/60 snakes. If the tide is wrong and don't ebb far enough we end up with a wasted 118 mile trip each way to our hotspot. The tide and winds play a big roll in a good or bad dig and failures become expensive.

Now your asking, where do we dig, and that is another story.
