Changing the name is supposed to be unlucky.

 

Here in Devon, that is also the case, but the Old salts (Fisherman) say its perfectly o.k. if you ask the boats permission first.( A sign of respect ).....you can always do this when your alone with the boat

But dont stand there waiting for a reply

Hiya, I think I'll only be down for the sat PM,and the sunday....might have to work Sat AM....crew, havent a clue, but.....probs Shaun if he fancies it.... might be intersested in a "friendly" comp with Ian, but might have to MOB'y him to find the marks.... ooeeeer, digs, not got anything booked as yet...mibbes the car !!!!

I thought the expression was "change the name and you change the luck".

 

Just change it to what you want Norrie you know how my luck changed so it has to get better

 

If you can get hold of an old bed chair, put the blue cover on (take the fuel tanks out)there is no reason why you cant sleep on the boat, I did just to save getting up in the morning

The old sailors had plenty more superstitions, including not bringing women on board, or pigs. Lots on interesting stuff on the web if you have Google and a few evenings to spare.

 

I started looking at the nautical origins of everyday sayings and ended up writing a 55 page booklet on them which I published in a limited editon of one for my Dad for his 80th birthday, so be warned, one search could become addictive....
