i think its wonderfull that deaf people can watch a little person signing and still watch what their signing about ,i cant perhaps deaf people are clever but if they are why not just read subtitles like we do for foreign films?

Because for many deaf people BSL is their first language. What you are suggesting would be like me having to watch a German film with French subtitles, I might just about get by, but English subtitles would be much better because English is my first language.

Have you never heard of Dame Evelyn Glennie? She's a virtuoso percussionist and has been profoundly deaf since her early teens. Oh and of course, like all highly talented people she hail's from north of Hadrian's Wall

Yes I have, percusion intruments are played by quite a few hearing impared poeple.

if you think about it all film used to be for the deaf because they were silent films with the odd caption

My kid's loved Tom and Jerry for a similar reason. When they were younger they could watch T&J with their little French buddies, dialogue is minimal in T&J cartoons so they did not need to translate very much apart from the "Keep of the grass" and "Beware of the Dog" signs.

Not really sure what your beef is here Ken, anything shown with embedded signing has previously been shown (probably the same day) and will no doubt be shown again (more than likely the next day) without signing, if you're recording repeats shown between midnight and 4 AM then do what the rest of us did when we got PVRs and find one of the multitudinous showings without signing to record, instead of the one showing a week that is signed.

 

Or failing that, just slag off deaf people for having the temerity to want to enjoy television like anyone else.

It's either mischief making for want of generating discussion or, if sincerely meant, it's worrying that people actually do believe in the 'I'm alright jack' way of life, irrespective of others.

The problem is Dave, as written English isn't the natural form of language for a deaf person and I have known deaf people to say that sometimes they find written subtitles are replaced too quickly to be thorghly read

trouble is the persons hands are tiny so you would need to concentrate on those and miss the program ,surely even deaf people learn english if not how would they "speak" with non signers?

perhaps signing is over used !a "secret " language for "special" people so prioritised over plain old english reading and writing ,gives the impression they are stupid.

how do they leave school without skills to get on with the hearing? not everyone is deaf so perhaps resources should be put into the 3 r's and less on signing?

fine for pre school kids but there going to have a job in the real world if signings all they can do.

 

handy for all if it were a worldwide language but it isn't ,the different versions in countries probably want their own "special" people to be different i suppose

It would appear that elective is NOT the way to go - just to change the subject to make a point - look at the transplant register!
