Newt lives in the number one pork producing state in the US. I live in the Midwest, the number one pork producing region in the US. At least in the Midwest the news outlets are screaming "It's not associated with pigs or pork" NO SWINE are involved!!!

As with the rest of the world, we are calling it "Swine Flu" while the pork industry reels in economic disaster.

Are you eating as much pork?

Phone

(We have a large hispanic population and have 5 confirmed cases in Kansas)

we eat an enormous amount of pork products here, and the reports are that nothing has changed because of this flu.

Now known as "new flu" here by the way.

We do have a more responsible press(newspapers) here, than in many places, which helps.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as "swine flu" apparently is not due to a swine influenza virus. It is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that derives from one strain of human influenza virus, one strain of avian influenza virus, and two separate strains of swine influenza virus.

.....

The origins of this new strain are unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in swine

Swine flu strains are part of this new bug but no pigs have been identified as carrying it. Since SIV (swine flu) is endemic (frequently found) in pigs, they rarely even get sick or show any symptoms from their version so it isn't that easy to tell which pigs have it and which don't.

Some people stopped eating chicken and other fowl when we had the bird flu scare, the same people will now stop eating pork. As usual normal food hygeine rules will kill the virus (and equally the bacteria which can cause other diseases). The infection is now being called Infuenza A(H1N1) in part to try and prevent the worrymongers making the matter worse.

The WHO is trying to popularise the use of its correct name, but I can't see the newspaper headlines using it - not so snappy!
