Off we go

In another thread it was mentioned how to get around the close season. With the season about to start or close, depending which way you look at it, how many of you will leave the rivers in favor of stillwater? Anyone switching to fly-fishing?

In no way am I trying to encourage a close season debate. Just curious.

Like Nugg, I will try a still water if the need

to wet a line becomes critical. But I will miss

my river fishing.

Inside every old person is a young one wondering what the hell happened!

I took up fly fishing many years ago to fill in the closed season. For a couple of years after the stillwater closed season was abolished I did not bother to go course fishing. Now I go when the urge takes me but primarily fly fish untill June.More out of habit I supose. My few trips to commercial type waters are normally during this time, mainly as they can be relied on to produce in the un settled weather conditions you get at this time of year.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I shall just carry on fishing stillwaters right through, one thing I will not be doing though is targetting pike in their apawning areas!

Den, pike hang around the spawning areas for months, sometimes until the following autumn. And anyway, by the end of march spawning will be over. Pike basically do three things, lay on the bottom, spawn and feed. Unless we don't fish for pike during Feb and March it would be hard to ignore the spawning factor! It controls the whole thing, unavoidable. Come the spring the bream hang round their spawning areas, same thing.

Dear Chaps,

One thing oft overlooked on these types of threads concerning close season topics are the fishing clubs themselves. For instance, if a controlling fishing club closes its venues be they stillwater or canal etc for the period of the old close season, then "NO" method of fishing is viable as closed means just that. CLOSED!!

Now whether one is against the close season on rivers or not, or indeed is perhaps disgruntled at the old closed season on stillwaters having been lifted, the onus still remains within the confines of those organisations that control the fishing. "Loop holes" are extremely easy to close if a club committee acting on behalf of its members wants them closed.

Regards,

Lee.
