Best Pike Dead Bait?

I was wondering which dead baits people rate for Pike fishing. I thought about it but could not tie it down to just one bait and any way I always take a selection with me while Piking. However if I had to restict myself to just a few for the cooler box it would be the following.

 

Lamprey (Or eel if I can't get an Lamps)

Roach

Joey Mackerel

 

Have to admit after reading about Poledark's recent fishing exploits for Pike, I did nip out at the lunch time today and bought a pack of Herring to try this weekend. So I have his bait, just a shame I doubt I have his skill :D

 

So what baits would you not leave the house without?

Like a lot of things in angling there's no such thing as "best".It varies a lot from water to water and sometimes even season to season.

 

Some baits though are more ubiquitous than others though.Dens recent successful bait are a good example.Herrings (a favourite of mine) can work really well on some waters but on others are pretty pants! The mackerel seems a bit better for being consistant as does the sardine.

 

A lot also depends on the amount of fishing pressure on the water,the type of anglers and the baits used the most often.

 

Never found a water where lives don't work though! But as the conversation (well I presume?) is about deads I would list my favourites as Mackerel,Herring,Sardine,Smelt,Roach,Eel in roughly that order dependant on water.

 

As for buying a "pack" Dales forget the tackle shop and either get your own or buy your sea deads anyway from Tesco's! Better quality and cheaper.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Luckily for me I live very close to the sea, about half a mile and also have my own boat so fresh sea baits are not a problem to get next year I'll be giving the gurnards a whirl and see how I get on with them as a sea dead, they cast like missiles when distance is required on some Scottish lochs

Other then the Lamprey, I get most of my baits from super markets. But I was in the tackle shop getting some maggots as planning to stick a feeder rod out while Piking and the Herring just shouted out to me "Buy me and you may catch big Pike like Mr Poledark" :D

Herring is a strange bait - I've never done very well with it. I have had the odd pike on it but haven't caught consistently, and so lost confidence with it.

 

Mackerel has been kind to me, but only on waters where there isn't much piking pressure. The most consistent deads I've used on gravel pits have been sardines and small trout. Smelt would be a close third.

 

Coarse deads have also been inconsistent - the odd pike on most of them (roach, rudd, perch, skimmers) but they wouldn't be my first (or second, or third!) choice.

 

Eels are a top bait in the fens and I've caught countless pike and zander on them, but again not done very well elsewhere with them.

 

Oddly, despite trying several times I've still never caught a pike on lamprey! No idea why, I know it's a good bait.

 

The above is specific to stillwaters and fen drains, I've never done very well using deads on rivers, unless they've been wobbled. In fact I think I've had more river pike accidentally on lobs than intentionally on deadbaits!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

It's been a while since I did any dead-baiting but sprats and herring always scored for me in the Teme and Severn!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Mackerel/Lamprey/Smolt. Freeze them, thaw them out and repeat several times it makes them stink and bits crumble off the bait when in the water almost like a chum. Downside is it makes soft skinned fish harder to attach.

 

Also take into consideration what fish are its natural prey in the water you are fishing.
