My m8's land rover is very good and does actually work great off road unlike a lot of 4x4's

trouble is real landies are pretty crap on the road :D

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

I had a 'proper' Landy once, series 2a 109, ex army, it could, and did, go anywhere, the ultimate fishing wagon, but on road it was absolutely awful, I'm sure it's the cause of my spinal problems now :)

The research institute I was based at had some series 2 (I think) landies. When I was living in a house they rented out to other students and staff, sometimes people would bring them home for the night and take them back into work the following morning, so instead of walking in I would cadge a lift.

The main memory I have of getting lifts in those things was the bloody cold and the windscreens freezing up on the inside. :cold:

My m8's land rover is the Discovery and is good on and off road. OK it's not as good as the land rover but it's not far off. Problem with all these 4x4's is the cost...deisel,tax, tyres etc...I'll stick to my Vauxhall astra estate. It's got loads of room, cheap on tax, great on juice and the heaters a corker !

The coil sprung landy is a much better vehicle than the old series models on the road.......then again they are off road "utility" vehicles, designed for use off road with the accent on military and agricultural use as opposed to modern "4x4" road orientated vehicles with occasional off road use built in as an afterthought.

Not that that is meant as a criticism of that kind of vehicle but if you want to go off road you just have to suffer the limitations of a "hybrid" vehicle.

Discos and Range Rovers are superb off roaders with the added extra comfort included in the deal but they can suffer from "monday morning hangover" or "friday afternoon" build quality problems!

The fix it yourself meccano style construction of the Land Rover family adds the extra bonus for DIY types though!

Before I bought the Vitara I was very tempted with a Daihatsu Fourtrack. Bit more comfortable than the Land Rover and very capable. I had one for a couple of days and was very surprised to get over 30 mpg. Could not get used to the lurching though.

I haven't been following this thread and may have missed something by not going back through al the posts, but surely the most reliable 4x4 is a Toyota?

I'd still prefer Landys though.
