Are you an angler, or a fisherman?

Hi Peter, I don't think there is a difference apart from in my case!

 

If I tell someone that I go fishing they ask the question, are you a fisherwoman/lady then? Personally I think either sounds stupid. I simply reply no I am an 'Angler'

 

I think it is a simple 'unisex' term for all who participate in our beloved sport. Whatever your choice be it, a sea angler, course angler etc

 

I think I look on fishermen as those at sea who fish for a living, ie commercial fishermen.

is it just words or are there two definitions, i prefer the term Angler to Fisherman, it seems to encompass our sport better.

I always think that Angler refers to someone who fishes for enjoyment/sport,and a Fisherman as someone who fishes for a living.

For some reason I always saw anglers as coarse fishing type of people, (no, not THAT type of coarse ), and fishermen as sea fishing type of people. Don't know why though. And as I do coarse, fly and sea I am not sure what I am. (Careful now!)
