Is super glue on bait a repellent ?

I’ve started to use plastic baits super glued to a hair and wondered what the consensus is on its use on baits.

A “search” showed similar questions but on old threads, now plastics are popular and glues are common is there any suspicion that glue can be detrimental, repellent on baits?

I've used superglue a number of times to make (for eg) a maggot 'worm' and a medusa. Both have worked very well so I cannot really agree that superglue is detrimental to the fishing.

 

One thing I do think can affect the fishing however is soap, so when I've a fishing trip planned I just use plain water to wash with in the morning.

Good question and one I have spent a little time thinking about. I use superglue to stick pellets onto a hair and have had good success, but my thoughts on it was confirmed as ok when a very well kown barbel angler also used the same tackic and has done for years, and has exceptional success on the same employed method.

I'm surprised some tackle firm has not come up with the idea of producing a scented glue to ease anglers fears. Scopex Super Glue at 5 times the price of standard glue :D

I've watched chub and barbel feeding when I've been using 2 pellets glued either side of the hair and none of them seemed bothered by the scent of the super glue, both species picked the bait up quite happily. The only slight issue is that I was using halibut pellets which are very heavly smelling anyway so could just have been covering up the smell but I doubt this was the case.

Good point Andy, but in such tiny amounts, I dont think so. I have inadvertantly eaten the stuff (when trying to take the cap off!) and it did me no harm :D

 

I guess if they ingested enough it would, but I dont think we should worry about a bit of glue, especially when leaving a hook or worse is what we should concentrate on avoiding most IMO.

Although the superglue is loosely based around cyanide with obvious huge potential to be lethal I have also managed to get some on the tongue and (though some would argue this!) I am fine. It does not stop fish liking the baits I have presented. Strange stuff and a mate recently showed me a trick when sticking baits on. A bit of spit makes it set quicker :rolleyes:

The cyanoacrylate molecule is a nitrile, containing a cyanide group, but it's a part of the molecule and not dangerous in the way that free cyanide is. You get the same grouping in nitrile rubber, which is used for latex-free medical gloves, hoses, gaskets and belts in engines, fake leather, etc.
