I usually call them 'my beauty' or, occasionally, just 'mate'. My daughter had a carp, last summer, that she called 'stinker' because of the way the landing-net smelled on the way home!

You meet all kinds of animal on the riverbank.

Shame on you lads! Nathan's asked a very sensible question, and one we haven't discussed for some time.

What size a fish has to be called big depends on whether you're talking about a specific water, area of the country, or the UK as a whole.

For instance a 10lb carp in a water that contains very few of this size would be classed as big. Yet it would be considered small for many carp syndicates in the south of England.

Nationally, I'd consider any fish over about half the UK record as a specimen, anything over about a quarter of the national record as big.

This means that a 15lb carp is big by national standards, and a perch of 1½lbs certainly is! So Nathan, a 3lb perch is more than big, it's very definitely a specimen!

My 2lb 12oz Grayling caught the other day on a hunch. I've not been so excited about a fish for years. :)

Depends on the species and the water. If you are fishing a water that regularly throws up Roach of about 6oz, and you suddenly catch one of one and a half pounds, that can be classed as catching a big fish. Catching a Roach of 2lb where they are regularly caught will not be classed as a 'big fish'.
