My first sea Bass will be a big fish to me no matter how small it is :D

I thought 173lb Common Skate was big until one of the AN regulars had one of 205lbs :)

My pb Common Carp of 32lbs was big but Sonjas first Carp of 22lbs on 8lb line seemed much bigger

It is all relative mate.

As several posters have pointed out, a big fish is a fish large enough to make you smile when you land it.

By that token, many fish pics in the press are not big - the angler is unsmiling or even scowling.

A question often asked is " what constitutes a specimen" Steve has in effect answered that one, but a more cynical view adopted by one or two angling "experts" (who shall remain nameless) - might be:-

"A specimen fish is one that is half-an-ounce smaller than my PB"

A percent of the national record as Steve suggested.

That has to be the only way, otherwise it’s all down to the opinion of the person in which case there was no point asking the question!!

You can’t claim a 5lb carp is a big fish just cos the rest are 3lb. It may be a ‘big fish for the water’ but a ‘big fish’ per se no way hose (ho say that is!!!!)

At the Rodbaston College Aquaculture Unit last year there were two Spanish students who worked for a while to gain experience.

One was called 'Jose' so - naturally - the other got named 'Hose B'
