Try gravy browning.

Depending on how mutch you use, you can achieve any colour from light brown to almost black.

Molases (or black treakle) is another option if you want a sweet mix but it is a bit sticky.

Mole hill soil has no stones (weired that) so it's good for adding weight to hold the groundbait on the bottom in a current and if it's from a clay area it'll bind bait together and cause a muddy cloud to run allong the bottom as fish (usually barbel) break it up to get at the hemp etc inside the groundbait ball.

Ken L,

who told you molehills didn't have stones in them. Someone told me that over 30 years ago. Since then, I'm a compulsive molehill examiner. I've developed a serious compulsive disorder about this. If I could remember who told me, I'd bl**dy kill him.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow - creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

IMO that was the best Carrott sketch of all time :)

But seriously, mole hill soil's great for getting feed down [and colouring groundbait]. I often use it with chopped worm on the rivers to get the feed to the bottom - works very well.

I'd live with the moles - sign of a healthy ecosystem. They wouldn't be there if there weren't enough worms.

Can't remember where I heared it but back when I was bait fishing, I never found a rock in one that I collected and i can't say that I've ever seen one in a hill that I've kicked over.

Then again, most of the Severn valley is either sand or clay and neither has that many rocks.

How about Yorkshire ? Yo've got compulsive but have you found any rocks ?
