A council has been ordered to pay £2,000 in damages after a schoolgirl fell and hurt her wrist while swinging from rafters in a playground shelter.

ok granted they shouldnt have been exposed but:

The first ruling was given after hearing the pupil had been caught swinging from the rafters prior to the accident and been warned by the deputy head teacher not to do it again.

The girl's mother was also granted costs.

I'd wager they were a bit more than £2,000.

Shelters....for kids!?....why?

We are raising a nation of wimps....perhaps it offers an explanation to anglers who seem unable to go fishin' without taking a tent (bivvy) and sometimes they are not even carpers!

Most, if not all Scottish schools have shelters in the playground. Scotland doesn't grind to a halt because of a couple of inches of snow. The kids need somewhere to duck out of the blizzards, they are usually not allowed into the school during breaks and at mealtimes.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Well in my kids schools case, they have a south facing playground, the shelters are there mainly to provde a bit of shade!

Greetings Andrew, :)

I tell yah, the country's gone totally mad. <_< Mind you, it aint going to cost the council a penny, don't forget its tax payers money they're playing with. I had hoped that David Cameron would have stopped this 'compensation culture' rubbish? <_< There's time for him to do something yet I suppose?

Regards, :)

Why not Andy? All the playground shelters when I was at school had exposed rafters. When I went to school, she'd have probably been belted on the other hand to even up the pain. She'd have gotten a thick ear from her mother if she came home and told her parents she had gotten the strap at school. The school was wrong to have the rafters covered, in my opinion this weakened their case, an admission of guilt.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
