The electronic bite alarm has changed the face of angling. Deep down, even though I do use them, I agree with Bernard Venables. B.V. made the following point:-.. <blah blah snipped>

Peter - haven't you got an electronic fish finder wotsit on your boat? Whatever happened to watercraft? :D:P

Anyway, who, properly attendant on his rod, should need such a thing?'

Who indeed?

 Just gang of noisy youths who didn't know a thing about fishing and who used electronics, rather than skill, to catch fish. And they even slept whilst so doing.

Youths like Dick Walker, Fred J Taylor, Peter Stone, Bill Keal, Frank Gutfield, Jim Gibbinson, Chris Yates, Jack Hilton, Rod Hitchinson, Bill Quinlan and Richie MacDonald.

Imposters, the lot of 'em.

I agree with the man. But thats only because i dont see the satisfaction in being half awake all night when i can be properly asleep after the pub in bed.

You can catch decent carp in the day if youre good enough!

I think its a bit sad but thats my own opinion but everyone has a right to live there lif how they want so......tight lines bivvie hermits!

Bruno, your not funny mate.

Well, I thought he was! But I do sometimes wonder if the legacy that Walker left behind has always been good for angling. I often wonder what Walker would say about angling as it is today. As Fenboy has been apt to say 'angling' went off the rails sometime ago, and maybe he's right. Just maybe!

Amazes me that Chris Yates uses one !

I can thoroughly recommend that you all read 'Bernard Venables, the illustrated memoirs of a fisherman'. He didn't use an electric bite alarm and he didn't go to sleep on the job and his books probably outsold Bruno's list added together!

Got two of 'em! But you know what, I rarely use them. One I was given by an angler who no longer used it, the other I bought. As a depth sounder it is great! For hanging onto a bream shoal it is great. But it doesn't allow me to go to sleep on the job!

I don't know about anyone else but i feel that using bite alarms to aid the catching of fish is quite pathetic.

As someone who enjoys sleeping even more than fishing, I find bite alarms to be essential...... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
