Hi Paul

I can't think of a book but recommend the magazine "Improve your Coarse Fishing". It has lots of hints and tips as well as colour diagrams.

Welcome to angling, hope you enjoy it as much as me.

when i started out I had a handbook which outlined the basics and fundametals it was not long or complicated, it was witty and easy to read. And it is still available today at w.h.smiths i know for sure, and almost certainly at amazon ect.. its called "freshwater fishing properly explained" and is authored by "ian ball".

I reckon it is the best "beginners" guide to fishing available it certainly stood me in good stead. good luck and stick at it. perseverence will reep rewards in the end:)

Welcome to you Paul.

You will find you can ask pretty much any question on here without getting razzed about it (that's US for "taking the mickey" I think :D ).

About the only sorts of questions that don't do well are things like "I want to know everything about every type of fishing so will someone please tell me all at once and right here, right now".

If you ask about a specific type of fishing (pole, ledger, float, lures, whatever), a certain type of water (pond, lake, river) or a species you want to try for, you'll get excellent answers.

There must be at least 1000 years combined experience on here (250 for Poledark, 250 for Vagabond, and 500 more for the rest of us) and most of the regulars on here are on here because they like to share what they have learned.

Hi Paul

welcome to anglers net,you will get used to the way people think on this forum, some seem quite mad and some even madder but all seem to know what they are talking about, you will find that if you ask a lot you will learn a lot and don't be put off by the occasional bouts of sarcasm and razor like wit ok DG all i can tell you is that unless you are loaded like poldark then don't spend a fortune on takle, just get the basics and build up slow,i was floatfishing with my cheap takle next to a lad with a 2 grand pole and i caught more than him(1 actually).

good luck and tight lines.

Bigman. :D:D:D

John Wilsons "Method manual" is a great book for novices to experts.

Also John Wilsons "Course fishing" for the basics.
