Do you do anything in fishing that you know you should not?

I do actually see where you're coming from John. Thankfully I never lived in a part of the UK where "muddy puddle" type commercials were to be found so have to admit I don't have a great deal of experience of them.

As you know I have been looking at venues over here recently but again I have to admit that when I do a bit of research on some of the carp forums the comments from some of the folk that fish these lakes do tend to put me off.

I am very lucky, I have a great choice of venues, both still water and running and wouldn't have to drive very far to be able to fish some pristine chalk streams.

Having said that I have only had one day in the past year on a "big carp" water and most of the time I am happy float fishing for whatever happens past. Sometime it's a carp ;)

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

What is right or wrong in fishin’, or in life generally is often subjective. Some of the interesting replies in this thread seem to show that. There are things we ought not do because the laws or rules forbid them, and then there are the things that ‘we’ decide not to do, probably for a whole range of reasons.

I probably do a whole lot of things that some think should not be done.

I sometimes forget to take a priest with me fishing, no responsible angler should venture out without a reliable tool to dispatch fish, should the need arise, and one never knows when that might be.

I sometimes live bait on waters where someone else had decided we shouldn’t, I only ever use fish caught from the same water though.

I sometimes deliberately cast onto a pool in the river where I know sea trout are lying, even though I don’t hold a migratory fish license. Any sea trout or salmon caught would however be returned to the water.

I take dead baits in the shop packing to a water where the rules say I shouldn’t. However I never leave litter of any type.

I regularly ‘troll’ lures and flies behind the boat, on some waters this is permitted, on others it’s not, I do it anyway, always taking care not to interfere with others. Sometimes it is ‘the ‘ method and too good to resist not doing.

I use dead baits from the supermarket or tackle shop on waters whose rules state they should be bought on their own little shop (at their own prices too!)

I know (my heart tells me) that I should knock all carp on the head that I catch in water where they have no business being, but have to my shame in the past returned them unharmed.

I sometimes allow the boat to drift beyond the ‘do not pass here’ posts ...I took my best pike last year that way....’forbidden pleasures’ are sweeter.

Thanks Dave, I don't ask for much more than someone understanding what I'm on about, other than understanding that I'm not picking on a particular fish, or a branch of angling just for the sake of it. It's just the ones that I've seen have a negative impact on the whole of angling, and the environment that surrounds it.

My signature says it all really, I heard it in a documentary on TV. It was said by a guy who lives in the North of the States, and needs to catch fish, (among other things), to survive. It struck a chord with me.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

All,

This is a most difficult thread to participate in. "Do you do anything in fishing that you know you should not?" is the subject. Most replies are about what you "may not" do. We don't have very many "may nots" and what few "may nots" we have are enforced with big guns and confication of ALL your gear including your truck. "May not's" are often enforced by fellow anglers - we rat on each other.

"Should not" is a matter of local custom. I have goofed that up on four continents but rarely on purpose. (I've told it before, someday I'll tell it again. Do you know the difference between a "stringer" in the UK and a "stringer" in America?)

Umm a few...

-Used micro barbed hooklengths on a barbless water

-Chucked in a bit of groundbait on a no groundbait water

-Used a method feeder on a water where it is banned (Nowhere in the rules did it say this, i only found out when the bailiff told me)

-I've also been thinking about fishing a small stretch of a river, but i have literally no idea where to get a ticket, despite asking the tackle shop people and looking on the internet, so this might be a future thing i maybe shoudn't do, i might just fish it and take a chance that a bailiff won't come round (Nobody fishes it and i haven't seen a bailiff yet for 7ish years!)

Basically minor rule breaking, a couple times without knowing (i know, ignorance isn't innocence) but nothing serious imo

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."
