All,

Unlike my beloved carp - aren't pike just fish?

Phone

Yes, and they don't even have names :D

I think the big difference is that Carpers are happy for every one to fish for Carp and believe they are the only ones who can catch the big whoppers.

The Pike Police tell huge whoppers to ensure that they are the only ones who should be able to fish for big Pike.

Go with some one who fishes for pike on a regular basis, and see what your club rules state on line and trace strength.Sorry but 10 lb sounds a litlle light for a newbie( on offence intended) plus i would use braid as you will feel every thump of the lure and any tell tell knock from following pike.

please also remmeber a unhooking mat at all times and unhooking tools

Smudger,

What scientific evidence is there that favors a slimeball disease infested bacteria concentrating black unhooking mat?

Perhaps pikers are much like my fellow carpers. The use them because they are told to. Not because they are safer. They are NOT.

Smudger, (or any piker)

The subject of the thread is roughly "the guy needs help learning". Fair enough, I too would like to know. The fish you call "pike" we call "northern pike" and they are a favored target fish among sporting anglers (Esox lucius).

In carping we use a well balanced clutch.

Why isn't 8 lb line enough for UK pike? Skilled Black Bass anglers in the US use very heavy line because it is paramount to "horse" fish into the boat as quickly as possible with NO clutch and line burning reel speed. It reduces the risk of a lure caught fish coming off. Pike guys in the US/Canada don't use heavy line in open water. Is it the culture of your style in the UK that would require recommending heavy line?

The swim strenght of all "pike" (one of several fish in the scientific or taxonomic name "esox ----") is not much. It is well below the strength of salmon and carp. Since bouyancy plays a role 8 - 10 lb line should be adequate I'd think for pike fishing up to 30 lbs or so?

I would agree with you 8 lb is a little light (well, a lot light) for a newbie, but then so is 50 lb PowerPro braid. Everyone has a learning curve.

It's not about the fish's weight, nor about what level of pressure it is able to bring to play. We use up to 85lb bs powerpro to cope with the heavy weight modern lures, less than that and one gets fatigued line which will snap either on the cast, or a snag where the hook should straighten before the line breaks or when plying a fish. I think this thread has contributions from some who don't really pike fish at all (thats not all of you before you 'kick off').

On the summer piking thing, I have just got in from a session which started at around 5pm we were off the water by dusk, my grandson and I, it is his (9th)birthday, I bought him a new rod and reel and some lures (shakespeare trion royalty spin 8! and a Mitchell avocet reel, a nice set up for under £60) we took 8 pike between and I don;t belive that we have killed any of them, summer or not.

Emma two,

Fair enough, I don't pike fish. That's why I tried to draw comparisons. It could be something as simple as casting distance required. Pike guys in the US/Canada are 99% boat anglers. I could certainly see it being a casting issue. Good point - and I will learn from it.

Truth is, most big predator anglers are going to braid over here. Is that true on your side of the pond also?

Yes it seems to be the case.

Emma i dont think its really scare tactics, at least it wasn't meant to come across that way. just highlighting that it can be hard to cope with pike when hooking goes wrong and especially with new comers to pike angling who might not have the know how or concentration to tell when to strike a bait or going to talk to a guy 30 yards down the canal path which ive seen happen a lot up my local canal resulting in deep hooked pike and its never pretty, ive had to help so many new pike anglers on the canal.

to date i have never seen any fish need so much care on the bank than a pike and those you stamp "the pike police" have all the best intentions. though those that Neil mentioned waiting for them to be full of spawn are the ones you want to look out for :P

Phone,

careful with the unhooking mat debate i almost got hung for putting a pike on soft wet grass a few years ago.
