I am trying to get a "grip" on why this thread and poll even exists? What possible differences are so profound in summer as to even ask such a silly question?

I think Newt covered the reason very well.

 

The potential problem has to do with the fact that pike are more active in warmer water (as are most fish & other cold blooded animals) so they fight harder and need plenty of oxygen. Their muscle structure is such that they are designed for short bursts of speed to catch prey rather than for long, "endurance" movement such as carp and many other fish.

 

Warmer water cannot carry as much DO (dissolved oxygen) so at a time when they need more, there is less available. Long fights in low DO conditions seem to massively stress this species and there is some thought they might literally fight until they die before they can be landed.

 

I think the fact that pike are not found in areas with warm summer water temps lends some strength to this argument. For instance, in the USA, pike are only found in the northern to central parts of the country and they aren't even found further south where summer surface water temps are fairly high when compared to UK water temps.

 

There are a few reasons for the silly question

 

The main one being that not much else was being discussed on AN at the time and I thought it was a subject that might get some debate going with oppossing views. It was a subject or post that I thought could wonder off in many directions such as below.

 

(a), Whether it is good or bad or indifferent to fish for Pike in the summer, many of our waters have a Pike season often 1st October to mid or the end of March. So I thought that might be discussed as to why, logic makes you think it is tied to welfare issues but is it?

 

(d), Pike do fight harder in the Summer and I thought that would come up and we could discuss the pro's and cons etc. Why do most only fish for them in Winter, obviously the poll suggests otherwise.

I'm confused with this. Why ban it in the summer? Tired Pike?

 

I can see the live baiting issue, but what's the difference with banning pike fishing from the whole of coarse fishing?

 

I thought Newt's post covered it very well as to why Pike could be treated differently. But yeah you could wonder about other species.

Many traditionalist say no to summer piking and by that i mean all pike fishing the thing they have forgotten is that piking has moved on and by that i mean lure fishing

lure fishing was something done whilst you waited for the deadbait/livebait to be taken and that was pretty much it

not until the late 80s really did lure fishing really take off and it caught big fish , so yes some find it good, some bad, and some indifferent.

 

We must all make our own choices as what is right in our own eyes as far as pike fishing whilst abiding by club rules,and returning fish as healthy as possible

 

Welfare of pike always arises, Winter has always been the traditional time for piking mainly due to the thought that water temps are low and pike are dormant for much of the time, but as we all know we can catch on lures even in winter,think alot of pike fishing depends on each seperate water fished, some are shallow and pike fishing is easy when mild and some are deep and fishing is hard except when the water temp begins to rise.

In fact, it (Northern Pike) has been widely introduced outside this native range, even into southern and western states. Native range is where Newt says. However, the US Fish and Wildlife goes on to say, ""Although classified by biologists as a coolwater species, the northern pike exists in diverse habitats, somewhat like largemouth bass but without a tolerance for extreme warm conditions."" Blah blah blah "...[in]water temperatures up to 72 F. where spawing becomes an issue".

 

It is true them "suck" as warm water sport fish but they survive until the other three seasons. To maintain Northern Pike populations in warm water they must be re-stocked (usually illegally). This last sentence is according to my pal Tom a muskie (musky) chaser and is not necessairly factual - he lies).

 

Newt's answer was wrong (maybe?). (sorry Newt). Although the amount of dissolved oxygen issue does ring true. Just in general, and from a OLD memory I believe(?) the maximum DO in water occurs around 75 F (25 c) (??). Maximum density of water is 39 f. (4 c) - (I threw this in because I'm sure I remember that one!).

It does not really matter whether what Newt said was true or not as he was answering the question asked below.

It was because of the reason's that Newt stated that rightly or wrongly some anglers believe that made it a topic maybe worth discussing as some anglers do not think its ideal to fish for them in hot weather because of these reasons.

 

Personally I am not sure about the whole fishing for Pike in warm water thing and so raised the subject to see what other anglers knew about it, whether that would be facts, stuff they had heard, read, made up, old folklore or there own experiences, I was not sure what would come out of it.

 

It was not a thread that I started so that I could come out and declare I knew the answer because I don't and I will not be rounding it off with any hidden knowledge that I have on the subject, but saying that I think..........................

Well, I may vote (but not yet) as if it will make a difference. I now agree with Newt and my pal who know his pike. At least in NA summer piking sucks, both for the fish and for the angler. Spring, fall, winter they are top draw.
