Groundbait substitutes

Most of this stuff is dirt cheap (e.g. layers pellet here is less than £7 for 25kg), I would just buy a load and experiment. You'll soon find out what works. To turn various pellets into a rudimentary groundbait mix, just get an old blender and whizz them up.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Problem is that I can't get breadcrumb

When I was in Germany I had problems getting bread crumb but most tackle shops sold biscuit crumb. Never tried in France as I took several sacks over with me and topped up whenever I came back to the UK.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Just out of interest how much would you expect to pay for a 20kg sack of hemp in the UK

There is one product that is cheap, and readily accessible to you. In fact, in another thread recently you were complaining about the amount you had to barrow about !

I refer to mole-hill soil. Not exactly a substitute, but added to your groundbait will make it go much further. Gives a nice cloud in the water, attracts fish but does not feed them, and you haven't got far to go to fetch it !

I used to use it a lot when I had to catch a mixed bag for a feature article.

Well I got a bag of chicken pellets and have to say they look the part, about 3ml probably. The other good news is they sink.

They contain Wheat, Maize, Bran, Rapeseed meal, Soya meal, Cane molasses, Salt, Sodium BiCarb and a few added vitamins so I don't see anything harmful.

I am going to whiz some up in the processor along with some other particles and a bit of vitalin to make up a base groundbait but do you think they would be OK just loose fed as is?

I am also wondering If I can use them as a breaker in my next packbait.

Maybe find out tomorrow :)

BTW, I heard that the makers of Vitalin have gone out of business :o

Nothing to come back to the UK for now :)

Course you can...Just liquidise some bread...simples :)

Could nt agree more.... just watch the fish go crazy for this.

On a river it can also lighten the river bed so that you can see the fish move over it (when wearing the polaroids...!)

Sportsman,

In answer to your "bulk hemp" question I thought this site might be representative(?). We have Canada real close so it, hemp, is quite cheap here.

As for bread. Your Ms. may be better than you imagine... A "very good" bread is to simply use the ingredients in bread in bulk. Use her recipe. In addition I usually double the yeast requirement. You can use the raw materials in a much coarser state if you wish (or mixed coarse and fine). And, you don't always have to make "wheat" bread. Substitute powedered ingredients for things like eggs.

No "rule" says it has to be baked. In fact, carp don't seem to know the difference - stupid fish.
