Paul D I have an okuma and a Youngs BJ I use the Okuma and the BJ is open to offers.......That should provide a clue! When I have sold the BJ I will have another Okuma for my lad.
Interesting, thanks for that Alan. BTW I quickly came around to your way of thinking that the Free Spirit Match Aerial wasn't much cop.....despite your modification which improved it no end.

I definately wouldn't say my BJ was crap although I've never seen let alone used one of the custom made top end reels that Alan probably has. As I say, it's head and shoulders above the rest (and we're talking several hundred pounds worth of the rest here) and I get great pleasure from trotting with it. I still smile when the current starts it rotating without any help from me using fairly light floats. Just got to sort out the right rod now......Anyone want to swap a 15'/17' Carbonactive for a Harrison Gti ? ....No, I thought not :D

have you seen the new Preston 15-17ft carbonactive sentient rod (rrp239.00)

It has been described as handling like a 13ft rod with a very forgiving action for light hooklength use.

RUDD

Different floats for different folks!

To judge from the foregoing comments, Okuma centrepins combine good engineering with a sensible price structure - shame they don't come with a line-guard (I find a line-guard indespensale).

No one has mentioned the Shakespeare Eagle centrepins (made by Vivtec in South Africa). They can be bought for about £40 from at least one on-line tackle dealer. Am I alone in regarding the Eagles as: (a) competent, "workhorse" reels, and (B) good value for money?

But who would want to be seen on the bank with a Shakespeare reel, for heavens sakes? Yer actual bankside cred would go walkies. Bad enough having a blue plastic tackle box :( .

That aside Jim, they don't look very nice!

Haven't had a look at that one Rudd, thanks for making me aware of it though. I know everyone raves about the Carbonactive range but I very much have a love/hate relationship with mine (although I only have the one rod). Positively detest it with the dolly section fitted.

No your not alone Jim - my 1st CP was one of these - I found the build quality was a bit variable - but I eventually found one with a decent spin on it - which was much improved by a squirt of GT85. The ratchet is a bit stiff - and very loud - great for announcing to all and sundry that you have a fish on! Was certainly a better reel than the lemon of a Leeds that my friend Paul had!

I still use it occasionally for margin fishing...
