Can you provide an honest answer to this straight question please, as I and I think a number of others here are quite confused - what's the connection between the barbel stocking history of the Hampshire Avon and the Wensum and navigation rights for canoes?

Well ok Anderoo. I'll recap again. Both rivers are Special Areas of Conservation because of certain endangered species that live in them. Barbel were artificially introduced into both of these rivers, and they predate on all the endangered species that live there.

The barbel fishermen then turn around and use very aggressive tactics to try to keep canoeists off both rivers by accussing them of being 'environmental vandals'.

Do you understand now where all the hard feelings are coming from?

The bizarre thing in this case, is most people on here just don't give two hoots about canoes or barbel stockings

Oh right. I guess that's why the thread has had over 1,700 hits, and more than a 100 replies. That is a bit strange isn't it?

but you keep banging that drum. If you really really want to, go and camp outside parliament, sell your house and take everyone to court, but when you have finished (even if you win) will it really have been worth the bother?

Nah, don't fancy that.

Or alternatively if you really just want a fight (which I suspect you do) why not go to a barbel society meeting or just into town on a Saturday night I'm sure many would happily oblige. I too have no idea what you are actually trying to achieve in this bizarre thread.

Nah, don't fancy a barbel society meeting either. That's just an excuse to get some poor sod in front of several hundred militant anglers so he can be publicly humiliated. The barbel society need to sort their affairs out if they want to engage with me.

Of course, I'd be happy to engage with the barbel society on an equal footing, for instance in front of a live audience, so long as the audience comprises a fair cross section of the public including canoeists, sea anglers etc..

In fact, I had a similar offer from Martin Salter some time ago, but unfortunately, he welched on the deal.

You may recall from post #76 that the other word the mods were concerned about was "lying". I agree that it's not a nice word. But I've only used it in connection with Govt organisations. I've never used that word against an individual.

Sorry but if you re-read my post, you will see that "lying" was not there. From post #76

Gents - lets back away from the name calling. Argue substance, argue opinions, argue right/wrong, but stop the "bully", "fascist", "hypocrit", and other such terms applied to someone just because you don't like what he posts.

For the record, I feel that government agencies and politicians are public figures and fair game for most of the names you want to call them and most seem to lie when it suits them.

Why thank you ayjay, finally a bit of honesty.

I've never been anything but honest; had you asked about Barbel stocking sooner I would have told you sooner but you've been banging on about canoe access.

Andy Young: Regards my using the word 'hypocrite' that you seem so upset about;

1. This was not directed at you so I fail to see why you have a bee in your bonnet about it. Except of course that you are clutching at straws in trying to gain a little lost ground.

2. As KenL has already pointed out; you have a very loose grasp of the Engligh language. In thr instance that I used the word 'hypocrite' was to describe Chesters1 who suggests on numerous occassions that rules are for breaking yet acts as a club official enforcing club rules and in his own words 'escorting persons off the premises'. The use of the word 'hypocrite' in this context is not abusive, but a description of the situation and of the person.

I really think the BCU needs another champion. You don't seem to be doing very well.

i escort people off premissses because its what the club wants and the law allows.in the case of the pond the club owns it ,all of it its not a river so can decide who goes on the land or on the water,if people merely walk along the bank (its not fenced) i point out where the footpath is and leave it at that ,if their angling without a permit they get escorted

as i said if rules were not broken or challenged this site would probably be only for sea anglers

i find those that those that find fault in grammar or point out language problems of another tend to have run out of sensible things to say themselves ,its generally the childish LA LA LA with fingers in ears approach and yes my grammar is appalling i rarely use capitals and very often i do talk crap ,who cares? if its that bad report it or ignore it or challenge it its your choice

you should relax perhaps join a club you know you want to

Yes the BS are pretty blind to things other than Barbel , and so I am afraid are a lot of Barbel only anglers who see any threat to the species a a personal thing rather than a broader view of Angling and in this case access to Rivers. Perhaps Fred Bonney could arrange something? I certainly would attend the local Glos meeting and perhaps we could settle old scores with a fight in the Pub car park :D

But back to access, and the one major problem I see with Kyaks invading the Upper reaches of rivers is the disturbance of the redds in the Spring, we all know that Anglers cannot fish the rivers at this time because of the impact it would have on recruitment of yearly spawnings, to allow such access would be plain wrong, and there would be an impact.

But apart from that, access to Rivers such as the Teme and Arrow would be catastrophic to our sport, any time of the year, so those that wish to paddle please stick to navigable waters where the impact will be minimal.

Most hits may be by members like me who are popping in to see what the hell are you going on about. Is it about canoe access? Conservation? General river stocking policy? General hate of Barbel? A dislike of anglers or people in general?

I have the feeling you are venting your frustrations with the wrong audience and like others if you are that bothered by your "perceived issues" why don't you take it up with those causing these issues. It looks to me like you just want an audience to rant at like those who hang around speakers corner mouthing off about a load of nonsense. If you have genuine grievances surely it would make sense to correspond direct with those individulas/organisations you have a problem with.

I think you have got nowhere on your crusade and know it will never lead anywhere and so in desperation you just want any place or any one to listen to your arguments. I would refer you back to the post from Kappa and suggest you learn to chill out, maybe buy a rod and enjoy a nice days fishing as long as a load of kayakers do not plough through your swim spoiling your enjoyment.

An angler who don't give two hoots about canoes or barbel stockings.

No, not really, it looks like the stocking of barbel into these rivers (not a frequent occurance as far as I can tell) is just being used as leverage. Are the whole of these rivers full of illegally stocked barbel that are destroying endangered species? (What are these endangered species?) I've fished the Wensum before and as I recall apart from one short syndicated stretch there really aren't any barbel. It sounds like what you're saying is you want to paddle through one short section of a very intimate river that others pay a lot of money to fish in peace and quiet, where you know you're not welcome. What about the rest of the river? Why are you more important than them?

PS the reason this topic has got a lot of replies is not because anyone cares particularly, it's just there's not much else to talk about right now ;)

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
