When I was in the MN I spent more than 6 weeks at anchor in the port of Aqaba in Jordan. Back then Jordan was a pretty laid back place for a Moslem country, alcohol was readily available, there are even breweries and vinyards in Jordan, but they are owned by Christians, but I digress.

 

My job meant that I had daily contact with the man from the shipping agent, a nice guy called Daud. We became friends and I used to enjoy my daily meeting with him. I used to tell him things about Scotland and he would regale me with Jordanian history. One day I mentioned to him that in Glasgow there was a chain of off-licenses, owned by a Moslem family. Poor old Daud was horrified, to him a Moslem selling alcohol was just as bad as one drinking alcohol.

To be fair, although I talked about pandering to a minority in my earlier post, so long as the activity engaged in (in this case drinking, but it could equally be gay sex, smoking or whatever) doesn't cause harm to anyone else, then the freedom to engage in it shouldn't be restricted, even if the people doing it are a tiny minority unless there is good reason to do so.

We have those already thanks to publicly funded faith schools.

Even when I was a kid, RE lessons were in essence Christian only classes.

 

What gets my goat is the general pandering to religious sensibilities as if they deserve special treatment.

"I'm a Christian, so I should be allowed to wear my cross despite a blanket jewelery ban".

"I'm a Sikh so I should be allowed to walk the streets with a dirty great knife worn over my shirt"

"I'm a Muslim so I should be allowed to use a bus pass without showing my face as identification."

People actually give credence to this pathetic bleating.

 

For some reason though it does seem to be the Muslims that inspire the most sickening preemptive pandering by certain terribly right on members of the PC brigade. We have Halal meat forced upon an entire generation of kids to pander to a religious group who might form a tiny percentage of pupils eating at a school canteen and who could just as easily go for the vegetarian option or bring a meal from home. We have the prat in the original post talking about closing an SU bar. We also have the subtle stuff - I would wager that not many English schools tell the story of the three little pigs anymore.....

Yes - I try not to get wound up by this kind of story when it appears in the Daily Wail or the Express, because they just like to stir the sh*t, so I tracked down the Guardian's take on it to see what I thought when it was spun as positively as possible. I still thought it was ridiculous.

what all of them ,i cant see every moslem losing any trade at all its not in their nature i expect.

 

pop round to them one by one and make a list ,i cant see our local moslem run franchise refusing to sell anything the company tells them ,is gambling a sin in the koran do they sell scratchcards?
