Cracked it (using a cunning technique)

Looked at weather report yesterday afternoon (at time sunny yet very cold and breezy from somewhere up north) and noticed the winf was starting to swing back to a SW with a nice wet windy front coming in.

Skipped dinner and went straight down to water I have been targetting (rock hard crytsal clear irrigation resi - no bites for 12 hours fishing so far).

Drennan super specialist rod and shimano aspire 4000 reel where the tools selected for the session - Scaled down mainlinefrom 8lb to 5lb with hooklength 3lb, size 14 match carp hook and a loaded crytal waggler shotted (three no6 two no 8) to approx an eight of an inch showing.

The peg I wanted to fish had wind blowing into it but was covered in so much scum it was impossible to fish. Went to second choice which had half as much scum which was on the move across the peg.

Plumbed up so bait just tripping along mid shelf.

Fished about 10 feet out under an overhanging tree but at an angle to get a good strike and to keep any fish hooked away from snag, also to keep me a bit further distance from fished area.

Feed a few pinches of pinkies and a few pinches of 4mm pellets and here comes the clever bit.

I threaded two pinkies up the hook sea style then fished another three on the bend - therefore giving me a very nice sized little natural type bait (if you get my drift) with only the hook point exposed.

Half an hour later an immaculate 7lb 3oz Male Tench graced the net (its taken me two seasons to catch a Tench there). About half an hour later a 12lb 6oz common was netted and in the following two hours two bites were missed and five crucians all over 2lb with the biggest going 3lb 1oz made it in to my grasp.

By now it was almost pitch black - I could hardly see the float - even with a low level headlight and the air temp went into freefall as darkness fell - by 2130 I was at home eating a cold dinner not giving a monkies with a nice big grin across my face

Excellent I think I would have had one too!

Rich

Cheers - its taken a while and a whole lot of observation and a little bit of what I would call trickle prebaiting IE very small amounts (half a pint of 4mm, a few 8mm and a few broken up boilies divided by five spots two times a week) in a few carefully selected spots - I have spent about the same amount of time observing the fish as I have fishing. To be truthfull it has been an interesting and enjoyable time well spent with alot learnt.

Still have the bream to find and have noticed some good roach topping in the evenings further out into the pool.

Rudd,

Good deal! I like it when I think I've outsmarted the little boogers. I thought you were going to finish off with a fish dinner. oops! that's in America where we do that.

Great write up. You should do it more often - very nice writing style.

Congratulations Rudd! Any piccies?

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."
