Can a sound exist in a vacuum?

Cory,

I suspect for brevity and to be "news worthy" the sensational term used is "speed of sound". Since they didn't say through what medium and the guy is airborne I would say the "speed of sound" as generally accepted is defined as "In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343.2 metres per second - (about 768 mph) - - - - - - - - [aren't you proud of me - I looked it up - WIKI]

A coffee guy says they won't try it if the wind speed is greater than 2 mph. Won't it, the wind, be more than 2 mph SOMEWHERE along the path all the time?

Wiki didn't say. Wonder what supersonic is in water? He might do that if he go off course to far.

Yes.

But it can't propagate through a vacuum.

Ken,

What is that? Some kind of "trick" answer? I agree with poledark. But then I don't believe in electricity 'cause you can't see it.

Does a tree falling in the forest make a noise if no one hears it?

Yep, he's definitely G.W.!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

Kinda.

Toss a ringing alarm clock out of an airlock on the ISS and it will continue ringing but as a vacuum has no compressible medium, the sound waves that the clock would generate in air don't get generated and it can't be heard from a distance.

Strip down to your skivvies and gaffer-tape the same ringing alarm clock to your head and then toss yourself out of an airlock on the ISS and vacuum or no vacuum, you will continue to hear the ringing because the vibrations will transmit directly through your skin and skull and as the water on the surface of your eyes , mouth and lungs starts to flash boil and the gasses in your lungs, middle ear and alimentary canal catastrophically expand in accordance with Boyle's law, you'd continue to hear the alarm 'til the very end.

I wouldn't normally bother but I was wandering if you were originally posting to confirm that the Aussie chap had made his jump.
