As I troll various fora I am appalled by the standard of written English on many of them (this is one of the better ones)

I can only assume this is down to text speak. The substitution of numbers for letters, lack of capital letters etc.

I was wondering, how far has this affected written English in schools? Do the old rules apply or do teachers now accept text speak as the norm?

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

I'm not a teacher, but I used to be married to one, and my daughter is one; no they don't.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

been a teacher and worked here in a school for the last 12 years!

and, nope, its not accepted at all whatsoever.

however it is part of how the youth of today speak, it is what they have grown up with and therefore their language and use of the written language is changing with it.

at this schools age range (11-18) we are just catching them as they form the basis of true social interaction and language skills; so whilst primary or junior school teaching may well involve spelling tests and correct use of written language etc etc by the time they reach High school they are forming their own forms of language and being far more influenced by the world around them and how they perceive language and the written word.

To be honest the written sections of courses within the school are awful! Literally awful and it is shocking beyond belief.

ok people are not perfect; especially on forums..my own problem is that i type too fast and get letters round the wrong way because of that! however when you see the level of some of the written skills in this school it is genuinely shocking.

its sounds like a broken record or a cliche....but it wasnt like that in my day! LOL

and truly it wasnt..we would never have gotten away with it or been allowed to write so badly etc

Children in the UK are not taught to write. In France children are taught cursive writing from nursery age, like this.

And what sort of Mid-Atlantic parlance do you call that? :P

"Gotten" is a perfectly good word on either side of the Atlantic, it's all in the grammar and the usage. Unfortunately our kids are no longer taught grammar at school. This is one reason why Brits are bad at learning a foreign language. It is very difficult to comprehend the grammar of a second language if one does not have a good comprehension of the grammar of one's mother tongue. Edited by corydoras
