Just a few points to think about....

The comet that impacted Jupiter a few years ago, if it had hit Earth instead, would have resulted in a global climatic change that would still be affecting us for years (if not centuries) to come.

[Jim] Jupiter does indeed have a reputation of sweeping up comets and meteors, but it does depend on Jupiter being in the right position at the right time. In this case, the meteor doesn't even come close to Jupiter's orbit. NT7 orbits between Mars and Earth and only just comes into our orbit once every 2 years or so.

Most of the 'near misses' in recent years have beed discovered after the closest approach. That means, if one of them had hit the Earth instead of flying past, we would not know about the threat until it hit. In the 20th century there were 2 certified 'hits' capable of destroying large areas of land (Earth gets hit every day by meteors, but they are just too small to notice. Most of them just burn up in the atmosphere anyway), the famous one in Tungusga (sp?) in the early 1900's, and one in South America in the 1940's or 50's. There may have been another one but that impacted in the Pacific Ocean and is only counted as a possible. The smallest of these three however would have wiped out London with ease, the largest could have left the rest of the world wondering where England had suddenly gone and why is it so dark?

Leaving Hollywood well alone, there is a real danger of a meteor large enough to cause climatic devastation hitting the Earth at some point in the near future. NT7 is only 2km across, but if it hits a landmass, it will totally obliterate thousands of square miles around the impact site and will then lead to climatic changes that will affect all our lives. The term they use is "Nuclear Winter", but the Earth has seen several of those caused by meteors/comets

Unfortunately, most of the Earth's surface is water, and you had better hope it does not impact an ocean. If that happens, you will have hundreds (if not thousands) of cubic miles of water being evaporated almost instantly.

Goodbye Sun, warmth, plants, life....

If the meteor is large enough however, it will drive through the ocean without slowing until it hits the ocean bed. It will not stop there though, the bottom of the ocean is (obviously) the thinnest part of the tectonic plate. It will break through the Earth's crust like a 15 million ton lump of rock through butter, and at that point you had better start hoping that your God really does exist.

Sweet dreams....
