Center Pin Ebay Prices ?

The price of some Center pins has gone through the roof, 300 pounds for a Match Aerial with four days to go seems mighty expensive.Others that seem way over priced a Chris Lythe 1915 Avon with four days to go at 480 pounds another Aerial this one 3 3/4 inch already at 155 pounds with 7 days to go somehow I don,t think we will be seeing any of these reels on the riverbank. Was the Match Aerial a good reel in the first place ? Sold a mint one two years ago for a 100 pounds though I was lucky to get that for it, now wishing I kept hold of it .

I agree that centre pins have their place in modern tackle, and intend to buy one. But no way can I afford some of the three figure prices that some fetch. I am prepared tp be shot down. I don't for one moment believe that some of these reels are destined to be fished with, rather brought out of their display cases, dusted and returned whence they came.

Match aerials have a cult status bourne of nostalgia, many people had them back in the old days ,but sold theirs when centrepins fell out of favour ,and now are buying them back .allcocks and then shakspeare must of sold lots ,as there always seems to be plenty up for sale .admittedly i'm not a great fan but they are good sellors ,due to there cult status ,not the best centrepins made ,but people keep buying them .

condition is king ,but prices do fluctuate and some gain a bonkers price .

chris lythe's reels will always sell for a good price (more than their retail price) as they're some of the best reels available ,and have their own cult status but not bourne of nostalgia but because they're superb engineering and style .

there are two c815's on this week ,and there prices reflect their conditions

I doubt that most Carp would be saying, "I aint taking this breadflake, because he's using a cheap centrepin". I'm mnore inclined to think the job is to store the line and retrieve it as the fish is played. I appreciate the wonderful engineering used to make the reels in question, but I doubt that a lesser reel won't do the job.

I strongly suspect that most of those silly price reels on ebay are going into glass cases too!. having tried using some "old" reels - I tried a speedia and a trudex that I bought from ebay a few years back, I'd say that a relatively modestly priced modern reel such as an Okuma Aventa is actually a much better fishing tool!

Chav,

Superb style is in the eye of the beholder. Much like guitars ($100,000), or new Jordon basketball sneakers ($600.00) or alas, in America at least, gun collectors. The market is determined by demand and marketing for a limited resource.

It has nothing to do with fishing.

Allcocks Match Aerial prices have always been volatile, they'd go through cycles of reaching high prices and then being available for a lot less some six months later. They do seem to have reached a plateau more recently but the figures you quote are for top notch examples with all paint intact (they lose it very easily). Shabby but mechanically sound MA's are available for a lot less and in my opinion they are very good reels particularly for a mass produced centrepin.

As regards Lythe reels you have to remember that new ones are still available but you'll wait three years for it because of the demand. The new price is currently £575 so any coming onto e-bay will fetch at least that. How much more depends on how much bidders want to pay to avoid the three years. I ordered one in February 2010 and it still hasnt arrived, at that time the price was £450 and thats what I'll pay when its delivered so if I was minded to I could turn an instant profit. That in itself will fuel demand and keep prices high. Fourteen months ago another Lythe 1915 reel went for a BIN price of £600 (seller would have paid £450) and I know the seller received offers to £550 before someone pushed the button.

It's just a case of there being a market for what are perceived as high end products. Perception is key to this because the relatively recent availability of much more affordable centrepins has done nothing to put a dent in the market. Functionality can't be a factor in their desirability because some of these lower cost reels perform just as well. I'm afraid it all boils down to good old market forces, in the small niche market of desirable centrepins demand exceeds supply so prices are bolstered.
