My first was a 1953 Chevrolet pick up truck that I bought in 1959 for around $75. 108 HP straight 6 cylinder engine. I put in a used 4 speed floor shift manual transmission and dual wheel axle from a much larger truck so I could drive it pretty much anywhere. The outer tyres were about 1 inch smaller than the inner so on paved roads it had 4 wheels but on muddy roads, it had 6.

Quite a varied selection here, the Zetec Fiestas were the only new cars that I’ve owned. Dad’s retired Ford employee discount was very good in those days and amounted to about 20% off the list price. It’s pretty poor now and although Mum is still entitled to the discount you can often get better deals with other manufacturers, hence the Volvo.

1972 Humber Sceptre

1979 Toyota Celica ST

1984 Austin Montego 2.0 HL

1971 Mini Clubman Estate

1983 Capri 2.8i

1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans-am

1985 2nd generation Ford Fiesta Popular

1985 2nd generation Ford Fiesta 1.1 Auto

1996 Renault Clio 1.4 RN Auto

2003 5th generation Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4

2004 5th generation Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4

2006 5th generation Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4

2013 Volvo C30 D2 R-Design

I’d be interested in your restorations Dave, in particular where you are sourcing body panels. Many years ago the Capri Club International stumbled across a number of unused bodyshells and they were put up for sale at about £5k each. A lot of money but they all sold very quickly.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Morris Ital 1.3 HL (awful, but my first car. Surprisingly tail happy for sod all power)

Austin Metro 1.3 (awful, but quite good fun. Rotten.)

Austin Maestro 1.3 (better than people think, but still pretty dire. Couldn't really afford to run it at uni, so my mum used it for most of the time)

Peugeot 309 GLX 1.3 (had this as a PhD student in the Lake District. Great little car, loved it. Great handling.)

Peugeot 309 GTi 1.9 (briefly, I drove it back from Glossop to Windermere and the damn thing caught fire)

Peugeot 306 XSI 2.0 (first "grown up" car, bought when I got my first proper job. Warm hatch rather than hot, with 125bhp, but quick enough to be fun)

Honda Civic Type-R (only ' brand new' car I've ever bought. They had been out a year and used ones cost almost as much as new ones. 200bhp, 8000rpm and the best gearbox I've encountered in anything. Fantastic drivetrain, and properly quick in 2002. Only four cylinder engine I've ever really liked. Also very practical, and easy to drive gently. Your nan could drive it to the shops, though it might rattle her false teeth out)

Citroen AX 1.5 D (bought for the wife to pass her test in. Chuckable little biscuit tin, and incredibly economical)

Mazda MX-5 1.8 MK2 (bought by the wife as soon as she passed her test. Not that quick, coarse thrashy engine, but great gearbox and handling and just so much fun to drive)

Mazda RX-8 (traded the Civic in for this after realising that I was having more fun driving the MX-5. Rotary engine, 230bhp, revs to over 9000rpm and smooth as anything while doing it. Rear drive, tiny engine mounted very low down and far back in the engine bay, handles superbly. Mine made a great noise with a sports exhaust. Downside - twenty to the gallon.)

Subaru Impreza estate 2.0 Sport (fishing car. Farmer spec Impreza, no turbo, four wheel drive, hi/lo transfer box. Not fast, but with all season tyres and 4wd it was a great practical car. Eventually blew up on the M6.)

Lotus Elise 111R 1.8 (once we had room to park three cars and a sensible estate car, I traded the RX-8 in for a Lotus. 189bhp in 860kg gives it 60 in under five seconds and 100 in about 13. Loads of grip, incredible handling, I absolutely love this car and still have it after nearly five years. Similar sort of engine to that in the Civic, revs to 8500rpm, but not as nice. Sounds coarse and bland as standard, sounds a lot better with a TRD intake and 2bular exhaust. Noisy, rattly interior, actually rides very well, you don't feel potholes but it sounds like you lost a wheel. Has been cheap to run, does 30mpg however you drive it, minimal depreciation)

Nissan 350Z (wife traded her MX-5 in for this because she wanted something faster. 3.5 litre V6, 276bhp, loads of torque. Pretty quick, though very heavy. Makes a lovely noise. She loves it and still has it. I like it a lot, if not quite my kind of thing.)

Saab 9-5 Aero estate 2.3 turbo (rocket propelled sofa. 250bhp, 260lbft from 1900-4000 rpm. Fast, safe, comfy, civilised, bit of a barge in the bends, laggy as hell, reasonably economical driven with restraint. Current fishing/dog wagon)

Ford van, another Ford van, VW Transporter, Bedford van (with sliding drivers door) Renault traffic, and Ford Transit. then a Fiat Fiorinno van, and now a Vauxhall combi van for my fishing.

Shared several company Vauxhalls with wife, also joint purchases of Range rover and grand Cherokee jeep and current "family car" is a Vauxhall Zafira.

Fiat And Transit best 2..............TOTALLY reliable.
