Almost anything that swims is edible, some nicer than others though! I would strongly recommend a strange book called "North Atlantic Seafood" which is a mix between natural history, commercial fishing and cookery. I found it by chance in a bookshop in the natural history section. It is also quite an amusing read, the author sometime forgets what he is writing about and wanders off with anecdotes and occasional lapses into mild bigotry (he's a Scot..). Anyway, it will tell how to prepare not only every fish you are likely to catch, but also every other edible swimming, crawling and static underwater thing as well. Enjoy.....

Like most members of the Scad/Horse-Mackerel/Trevally family it is what you might call "Neighbours' Fish" ie you keep the bass for yourself, and give the bloke next door the scad.

 

Certainly edible if you take a bit of trouble with it (fish cakes with strong herbs, fish curry etc) but not very exciting on its own.

Nothing wrong with jellied eels, even better, find yourself a nice pie and mash shop in east london. then treat yourself to pie, mash, stewed eels with plenty of liquor, wonderful, shame you cant get it mail order as i now live in sheffield,lol :D:D

While in Holland I ate raw herring fillet with chopped onions,it was prepared by the fishmonger and was lovely...the wife said I looked like a SEAL eating it in a oner. If you dont believe me ask Alan.... He ate one along with me.. :P

I think You can get them over here, but I'm sure its what we call rollmops, any supermarket does them in jars, or a local fresh fish shop should have them, although I bet they taste even better fresh :)

Used to eat them for breakfast when I was visiting my Belgian Grandmother as a child. I remember two sorts, the ones we call rollmops and ones with chopped onion, salt and pepper but no vinegar. Yummy.

Help me unhook these, please.

Hiya, I think Rollmops are pickled in vinegar,I used to have them regularly, with a salad. The ones I had were totally fresh and prepared by the fishmonger, head off, bones out and covered in chopped onions. I tried to do them when I got home, not the same, but, I've got a few fresh sardines in the fridge I am going to try tomorrow.

Norrie promptly followed the herring with a pound of cheese and then started looking at the chicken drum sticks that were sizling away. The air must have been ripe in the caravan that night :rolleyes::D
